Chatmore Students Hold Mini Science Fair
The students in Milepost Two at Chatmore British International School recently held their International Primary Curriculum [IPC] end of unit Exit Point and Mini Science Fair, the culmination of their learning in the IPC unit “Let’s Plant It”.
A spokesperson said, “The Science Fair displays demonstrated the process the students went through to carry out a measurable science experiment and conduct a fair test.
“For their experiments, each of the students chose two identical plants and fed one plant water and the other plant a beverage of their choice. They did this at specific times each day for seven days.
“At the end of each day, they would highlight any changes they noticed. They chose beverages such as Gatorade, Red Bull, Coffee, Powerade, Grape juice, Orange Tangerine Juice, Sunkist and Orangina. In the end, the plants that were fed water and coffee thrived the most.
“In their IPC unit “Let’s Plant It”, the students learned a lot about the kinds of plants that grow best in our environment, the life cycle of plants and the importance of growing our own food.
“The highlight of the unit was the time and effort each student took to clear and weed out a small plot of land at the back of the school. They then got seeds, vegetable sprouts and flowers from a local plant nursery and planted them in the ground. Over many weeks, they took care of their land and their plants.
“There was much excitement, after an agonizing wait, when the sprouts began to grow and even more excitement when peas, tomatoes and kale began to appear.
“The “Let’s Plant It” unit involved a lot of math and measuring with the students learning to measure the growth of their plants in centimeters, inches and feet. They learned to choose the right unit to measure the height of their plants over time and to compare units. Along with this, they also enjoyed studying photosynthesis on land and in water.
“Needless to say, the students are still watering their plants everyday and enjoying the fruits of their labor. “Let’s Plant It” is the IPC unit that keeps on giving.”
