Video: Interview With Patricia Gordon Pamplin
Opposition Leader Patricia Gordon-Pamplin sat down with Bernews today for a live interview on our Facebook page, discussing a wide range of topics including their election loss, how the OBA governed, their communications, and whether she wants to be the party leader on a long term basis.
Speaking with guest interviewer Jeremy Deacon, Ms Gordon-Pamplin also touched on the immigration decision made in relation to Rev Tweed, whether the OBA can be an effective Opposition, race, the PLP and more.
This interview follows after the OBA’s election loss, which saw the PLP record a 24-12 win, and former Premier Michael Dunkley resign as leader, and Ms Gordon-Pamplin selected as the new interim leader.
Bernews plans to continue our live interview series with various Cabinet Ministers explaining their initiatives, plans and what has occurred since the election.
If you want to listen ‘on the go’, you can also access the audio only version of this interview, and all our past interviews, in the podcast section of the Bernews app.
LOL…The Oba needs an autopsy real fast…your PR was fine…
It was your policies that the majority of the country didn’t like..
Albeit, You/obaers think we/ plpers are too stupid to understand that you know better than us, what’s best for Us, ignorant bermudians voters. … .
The arrogants of the ova they insults the voters. ..then expects Us to vote for them…
No Way Never..
This interview shows that the OBA are right where they belong and will be for a very long time….
Hold on? Did she say “Balance the population?” @13:10 I’d like to know what she meant by that? Did she mean watching 3000 Bermudians leave these shores for a better life? And Open the flood gates to PRC ad others who have overstayed, flouted laws, been “rolled over and over?”
People left because the PLP wrecked the economy. Don’t rewrite history.
No they left, and I quote a friend in England who told me this…”There is a concerted effort not to Hire Bermudians (recent job stats back this up)and the then Gov’t OBA put severe restrictions on receiving financial assistance.”
There is an orchestrated conspiracy afoot? Please do tell more. Sincerely interested.
No, “Phony Onion” people left because the great recession hit Bermuda’s shore and caused the largest economic downturn in decades.
Stop with the great lie about the PLP and the economy of 2008/9. It has reached the end of its political shelf life.
Did you not get the memo on July 18th?
Most economies were out of recession within 15 months. The PLP home-made Bermuda recession lasted 7 years. You lot love to rewrite history.
And that’s what you think. Anyone with a PRC has “overstayed and flouted laws”. Total nonsense.
I like how you slid “Anyone” in there to fit your narrative… Where it’s clear that I did not say that, but carry-on….And yes there were employers who did indeed flout laws, how does a Guest Workers sister and cousin now have jobs here and have now for over 7 years? Why was there a whole sale PRC giveaway in the 70′s after a 3 year stay? Was pathways another opportunity to “Balance the population” as she said in the video?
You sais “prc and others who have flouted laws and been rolled”.
You said PRC holders flouted laws.
Give us half a dozen examples, or we know you’re lying again.
Well, you did say the following sentence:
“And Open the flood gates to PRC ad others who have overstayed, flouted laws, been “rolled over and over?”
Your sentence suggests that your description of “overstayed, flouted laws, been “rolled over and over?” applies both to “PRC” and to “others”.
Zevon’s use of “anyone” is a reasonable inference. You were making a sweeping, general statement. If your intention was to suggest that only some PRCs “overstayed and flouted laws”, you could easily have said that.
Of course, that would still be wrong and missing the point of Zevon’s statement. He was alluding to the fact that PRCs are welcome to live in Bermuda free of immigration control and, ipso facto, can’t have “overstayed and flouted laws”.
Also, there was not a whole sale PRC giveaway in the 70s after a 3-year stay. You’re confusing the situation where previous non-Bermudian voters – which was a holdover from the days of empire when British subjects were allowed in and out of Bermuda (mostly from the UK and Caribbean) – were grandfathered in and not deprived of their right to vote. They did not get status until 2002.
“And Open the flood gates to PRC ad others who have overstayed, flouted laws, been “rolled over and over?””
You mean tweed and the Uighurs?
No, we mean people who came here, liked it, overstayed their time and then decided that Bermuda owed it to them to allow them to live here permanently.
It was the PLP who created the legislation allowing for PRC. It was the PLP that allowed over 10,000 work permits, which have to be vetted by Immigration. Are you saying Immigration doesn’t do its job? You may be right as Immigration refused the work permit of Rev Genevieve/Tweed because of alleged false documentation. That decision was supported by the OBA, only to have the PLP grant it. Proof the PLP will override Immigration decisions. Maybe the reason for around 80 work permits granted for the St George’s hotel recently. I thought the PLP said there were thousands of unemployed Bermudians? PLP clearly being anti Bermudian within the first 30 days.
And there is the crux of the situation. You, and others (who talk about ‘flouting laws’), are conflating a legal argument with a moral one. These persons were in Bermuda legally. So instead, we’re making a moral assessment of who is ‘entitled’ to call Bermuda home.
Who decides whether they overstayed their time? Everyone likes to be a self-appointed arbiter of these sorts of moral questions. These folks were legally in Bermuda and, ipso facto, could not have overstayed their welcome.
How many generations of Bermudians either came, or were born to persons who came, to Bermuda from other parts of the Empire under the liberal immigration laws before 1956 when the concept of ‘Bermudian status’ was created and used to impose immigration controls over and above being a mere ‘British subject”? By your same standard, many of these families came to Bermuda and overstayed their welcome.
Of course, they were in Bermuda lawfully, so it’s a silly statement to make. But then – it’s just as silly a statement to make about PRCs who have lived in Bermuda legally and who ultimately got Bermudian status.
Your communication failed because you did not have the guts to speak out Leah Scott did and got in trouble. Kenny Bascome would not answer question but will refer you to the premier you Pamplin are really lost move jaside and let Leah run the opposition at least you will get honesty
sad this woman still will not admit that she did something wrong
and that the oba was hell bent on making life for black Bermudians
hell.
she is on the wrong side of history at 24-12 the people clearly showed that they were sick and tired of the oba/upp sh====t
Thank god she will not be the leader for too long. Jeff Baron we need you
With her as the leader these guys are finished. Only a clown or a person desperate for a paycheck would want to be leader of that party.
Damn Shame this Lady. Ooh well it’s to late now, there is no turning back for her.
The number of anti-Bermudian policies that she was directly in charge should have given her pause. And even though she hesitated to blame the voters; still they must have been brain washed to throw the OBA out and it was not her government’s fault that their policies did not impress Bermudians; instead the PLP was successful in blind siding the people. The OBA with that mindset will ensure even if they survive as a political party; that they will remain a political opposition for some time to come.
Alvin, you state “the number of anti Bermudian policies”. Please name them. Recall that under the PLP, legislation was passed to require Bermudians married to non Bermudians to obtain a licence before buying property. Very anti Bermudian. A non Bermudian was refused a work permit renewal by the Immigration Board. The day after the election the PLP Minister used political interference to overturn that decision. Very anti Bermudian let alone poor governance. Under the PLP thousands of non Bermudians left because of PLP policies, causing a hundreds if not thousands of Bermudians to lose their jobs. Very anti Bermudian.
Shortly the PLP will have to announce their intention to increase the numbers of non Bermudians to increase the tax paying base. That will increase job opportunities for Bermudians. When the OBA suggested this they were met with protests so I expect a similar reaction from the public to the PLP, or will it be accepted because the PLP announces it?
No answer, predictably. Alvin finds facts hard to deal with.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The facts LOL Bob was talking about the real JetGate, if you want facts. So many lies in the obaUBP. Craig and the rest of my people need to distance themselves from the UBP and form the BDA party again. The oba/UBP is finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How about answering Ringmaster’s points? Too hard for you?
