Bermuda College Students Attend Convergence
ILS [Bermuda] Ltd. announced fourteen Bermuda College students’ complimentary attendance at the Bermuda Convergence 2017 event – the largest global gathering covering the alternative risk market and Insurance-Linked Securities.
The newly announced education initiative is two-fold. It was earlier announced the new initiative will also provide scholarships for five Bermudian students working towards an Associate in General Insurance [AINS] designation through the Bermuda Insurance Institute’s [BII] ‘Career Pathways’ program, as well as work shadow opportunities in the industry through partnership with ILS Bermuda member companies.
In addition to the financial contribution towards the Scholarships, the second part of the initiative entails working with the Bermuda College through the offering of complimentary admission to the popular annual event and attending lectures from industry specialists.

Tim Tetlow, a member of ILS Bermuda’s Thought Leadership & Education team and Partner and Chief Operating Officer of HSCM, is the brainchild behind the education initiative between ILS Bermuda and the Bermuda College.
He said: “Last year we had a few Bermuda College students attend the event and it was well received by both them and their professor. After some internal committee discussions we all agreed this was an excellent opportunity to engage and educate young Bermudians on the niche segment of Insurance-Linked Securities and the alternative reinsurance space. This is how the idea came about and is only part of our full education initiative with also includes our complimentary work with the BII.”
On September 28th and October 5th, Tim Tetlow volunteered to lecture at the Bermuda College and lead an introduction to Property Catastrophe Reinsurance and a second lecture on an introduction to Insurance-Linked Securities [ILS]. He plans a post-event lecture for students who attended Bermuda Convergence 2017 to respond to any questions they have after listening to the variety of panels and topics over the two days.
Mr. Tetlow, a Bermudian, holds a BSc. degree in Physics. He is a Fellow of both the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society as well as a former student of Bermuda College Economics Senior Lecturer, Craig Simmons, who will also attend the conference along with Mathematics Professor and Department Chair, Dr. Ali Arouzi.
This year’s event promises an exciting line-up of speakers and ‘Bermuda Shorts’ topics including: Runoff, Rated Reinsurance, Market Uncertainty, Insurtech, Fair Value, Longevity Trends, Cyber Risk, Natural Catastrophes, Emerging Risks, and a special panel on “ILS and Flood – From Talking to Action”, as well as the popular annual panel with leading Investors in ILS. Keynote Speakers include best-selling author, Dan Gardner and Michael McGavick, CEO of XL Group Ltd.
Kathleen Faries, Deputy Chair of ILS Bermuda Ltd., and Head of the Bermuda Branch, Tokio Millennium Re AG, said: “ILS Bermuda is proud to be in the 5th year of hosting the Bermuda Convergence event and fortunate to have the opportunity to engage with Bermuda College students who have interest in the property catastrophe business and the various methods by which the industry engages in risk transfer. 2017 will be an interesting year for the cat market and Bermuda will certainly play in big role responding to recent events.
“We are pleased to support this education initiative and to provide this particular opportunity to a new generation of insurance professionals. We hope the students enjoy the event and find interest in the supporting lectures at the Bermuda College.”
Craig Simmons, Economics Senior Lecturer of the Bermuda College said: “Our students are fully prepared to take advantage of this year’s ILS Convergence event. They have all participated in two comprehensive pre-conference sessions put on by Tim Tetlow, which has given our students the background needed to gain maximum benefit from the conference sessions.
“I am impressed with the seriousness with which our students are taking this educational initiative that will give them unprecedented access to the reinsurance sector and alternative risk market in Bermuda.”
ILS Bermuda is expecting Convergence 2017 to be the biggest global event to-date in the ILS sector with record attendance and keen interest from key participants throughout the world.
