Second Day Of ICC Qualifier Warm-Up Games

On the second and final day of the warm up games leading up the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019, Namibia, Jersey, Canada, Oman, Scotland, Hong Kong and UAE posted wins.

The ICC said, “In the first match of the day, Namibia cantered to an eight wicket win over Nigeria in Dubai. Batting first, Nigerian openers – Adeleke Oyede[35] and Daniel Ajeku [16] got the team off to a steady start, stitching together a 55 run stand but after their dismissals, the middle and lower failed to build any momentum and eventually folded for 96-9 in their stipulated 20 overs. Christi Viljoen, Bernard Scholtz and Craig Williamseach scalped 2 wickets each. In response, Niko Davin scored 33 and captain Gerhard Erasmus struck an unbeaten 32 off 17 balls to lead the Namibians home.

“In the afternoon, Jersey listed their second straight win in the warm-up games as they beat Singapore by six wickets. Batting first Singapore got bowled out for 112 in 20 overs. Julius Sumerauer was the pick of the bowlers as he picked 3 for 20. In reply, Nick Groonwood’s unbeaten 46 was enough to ensure that his team scaled down the total without much to worry about.

“Canada too listed their second successive victory as they beat Kenya by 6 runs. Batting first, Nicholas Kirten topscored with 61 and captain Navneet Dhaliwal chipped in with 46 to take Canada to a 191-8 in their stipulated 20 overs. In response, Alex Obunda’s 46 and Rakep Patel’s 38 went in vain as Kenya never seemed in contention to chase down the target. For Canada, Jeremy Gordon returned best figures of 3-27.

“Scotland later edged Ireland in what was a thriller at the Tolerance Oval in Abu Dhabi. Batting first, the Scots spurred by George Munsey’s 86 tallied a mammoth 210. The Irish, in reply got off to a nervy start as Kevin O’Brien was dismissed off the first ball of the chase – Andrew Balbirnie scored 70and Mark Adair chipped in with 49 but Scotland restricted their opponents to 209 thus ensuring a last ball win.

“Oman too, added to their recent string of wins by defeating Netherlands by 4 wickets. The Dutch batting first, scored 169-3 in 20 overs. Ben Cooper scored 60 while Ryan ten Doeschate and Max O’Dowd contributed 36 and 31respectively. Oman, in response, chased down the target with 2 balls to spare. Jatinder Singh [64] and Khurram Nawaz [23 not out] were the standout performers for them.

“In the final set of matches in the day, Hong Kong and UAE lister victories.

“In Dubai International Stadium, Hong Kong beat Bermuda by 24 runs. Kinchit Shah topscored with 48 and Waqas Barkat notched 33 as Hong Kong managed 160-5 in their 20 overs. In response, Bermuda batsmen never got going and eventually managed only 136-8. Waqas Barkat was the wrecker in chief for Hong Kong taking 3 wickets for 20 runs.

“In Abu Dhabi, hosts UAE held off a spirited chase from PNG to win by 15 runs. Captain Ahmed Raza won the toss and elected to bat first and his batsmen put a solid performance to post 193-2. Both Md Usman [60] and Darius D’Silva [43] were asked to retire after chipping in with key knocks. In response PNG put up a spirited fight managing 178-7. Sese Bau top scored with 40 and for UAE, Waheed Ahmed took 3-36.
