CURB Gathering Information On Land Losses
Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda [CURB] is “gathering oral histories on systemic land losses that have occurred historically or contemporarily” to submit to the Commission of Inquiry into Historic Land Loss.
A spokesperson said, “CURB is gathering oral histories on systemic land losses that have occurred historically or contemporarily in Bermuda to submit to the Commission of Inquiry into Historic Land Loss led by The Hon. Mrs. Norma Wade-Miller OBE JP.
“An important part of this work are stories from your own experience, or handed down from parents, grandparents or great grandparents, of land lost due to misappropriation of land by devious means or where land was under compensated.
“We understand that much of this land loss occurred in the 20th Century e.g. Tuckers Town, during WWII for military purposes and land for tourism hotels. If possible please provide historic or contemporary photos of the land, who owned it, its location and size, and any documents you may have supporting ownership. But if all you have is the story passed down in the family, we welcome this living history.
“CURB understands that there is still fear present in our community about economic repercussions and we therefore offer the ability for you to share your story with us, indicating that you wish to remain anonymous.
“Oral history is a recognised method of conducting historical research through recorded interviews between a narrator with experience of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of adding to the historical record.
“We will be collating these oral histories and they will form part of our submission to the Commission of Inquiry. By July 19th, share your story by emailing CURB at admin@uprootingracism.org, calling us for an interview on 707 1496.”
