Support For Mom & Daughter As Post Goes Viral

January 26, 2022

A post on LinkedIn by Katie Cooper Berry detailing her resignation as Executive Director of Keep Bermuda Beautiful in order to support her teenage daughter who was diagnosed with a brain tumour has gone viral, receiving more than 46,000 likes and 2,300 comments since being posted.

In the post, Ms. Cooper Berry said, “Today my resignation as Executive Director of Keep Bermuda Beautiful was accepted. It was not the plan. I loved my job. I gave it my all and am so thankful to all of you who became supporters, donors and volunteers. KBB still needs you!

“However, my new role will be the most challenging of my life; as carer. On November 12th, my 15-year-old daughter Emilia Rose was diagnosed with a brain tumour. I have chosen to be her advocate, champion, cheerleader, chauffeur, chief appointment maker, hot chocolate maker, hand holder and researcher. I am thankful I am able to make this choice. Although not without its own sacrifices, it is not lost on me that we are so lucky that I can.

“There are so many parents in the brain tumour club that do not have my privilege. They balance their jobs whilst on the terrible roller coaster of childhood cancer and the side effects of surgery and treatment. It is not for the fainthearted. One day I hope to return to the world of non-profits, but until then my job is to be by Emilia Rose’s side.”

Regarding the social media post, Ms. Cooper Berry explained to Bernews that “the real message of the post was about the importance of choice in times of need and how we live in an unfair world where not everyone gets the chance to make the choices I am able to.

“I am very conscious of my privilege and at some point in the future I would like to help people who do not have the same opportunities I do,” she added.
