Portugal advanced to the knockout stage of the World Cup in Qatar with a win over Uruguay.

Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock in the 54th minute when his cross floated beyond Sergio Rochet, the Uruguay goalkeeper.

Initially, it appeared as though the ball had glanced off Cristiano Ronaldo’s head, but replays showed the goal belonged to Fernandes.

Portugal secured the victory in stoppage time when Fernandes converted a penalty after a video assistant referee adjudged Uruguay defender Jose Gimenez handled the ball.

Uruguay must now beat Ghana in their final Group H game to stand a chance of qualifying.

Five-time champions Brazil reached the knockout stage with a narrow win over Switzerland.

Casemiro, the Manchester United midfielder, struck the winner with seven minutes remaining with a superb effort into the far corner.
