Bermuda Encouraged To Shave For Kids’ Cancer

January 17, 2023

The official countdown to St Baldrick’s Bermuda 2023 has begun with less than two months till the big shave event on March 17.

A spokesperson said, “Every 2 minutes, a child somewhere in the world is diagnosed with cancer. Locally the community can help conquer kids’ cancer by participating as a shavee or by making donations towards one of this year’s registered shavees!

“In Bermuda, we celebrate 22 years of involvement, over which our community has raised an extraordinary $7,432,473 for The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest charitable funder of childhood cancer research grants. They are on a mission to Conquer Kids’ Cancer by supporting the most promising research to find cures and better treatments for all childhood cancers!”

Cheyra Bell, Event Organiser, said: “The Bermuda St. Baldrick’s committee is looking forward to hosting the 22nd annual event on March 17, 2023. We would like to encourage any interested person to show support by donating towards this amazing cause of standing in solidarity and fighting for childhood cancer. If you would like to register as a Shavee and “Brave the Shave” it would be an honour to work with you throughout the process. Feel free to contact myself with any questions via email bda.stbaldricks@gmail.com”.

The spokesperson said, “It is important to note that in return for Bermuda supporting the amazing work of The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, St. Baldrick’s provides a grant [10% of funds raised from local events] to help fund Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s SunSmart Programme. SunSmart offers free education to schools and summer camps and aims to increase the awareness of our youth about the importance of incorporating SunSmart behaviours into our daily lives to reduce one’s risk of developing skin cancers later in life.

“While shaving one’s head is traditionally the most common way to fundraise for St Baldrick’s, many participants opt to make a pony chop without going fully bald. Whatever your fancy, there is no wrong way to get involved and fundraise for this exceptional cause! Learn more and register your participation here. Then share your fundraising page with all your friends and family and request their generous support! This year’s shave event will take place on Friday, March 17, starting at 6 pm at Docksider’s. So, please mark your calendars and come out for a fun evening that benefits our local community and is an incredible global initiative.

“The St Baldrick’s Foundation was founded in 1999 and, since 2005, has raised $314 million in research grant funding. With the belief that no hospital has a monopoly on good ideas, The St. Baldrick’s Foundation funds the most promising research — no matter where it happens. Carrying out research takes more than 200 experts, and funding it takes people like you! With events occurring worldwide, the St Baldrick’s Foundation supports more childhood cancer research grants than any other charity.”
