National Trust: World Heritage Dig At Globe

March 9, 2023

An “opportunity to better understand Bermuda’s history and World Heritage Site is being taken in a combined research project between the Bermuda National Trust and the University of Rochester,” the BNT said.

A spokesperson said, “”A team of staff, students and volunteers led by Dr. Michael Jarvis is doing targeted archaeological testing in the cellar rooms of Globe in St. George’s. The dig beneath select areas of the cellar’s flagstone floors is designed to help answer several historical and architectural questions that have recently emerged about this important building and Trust Museum on King’s Square.

“Bermuda National Trust author Diana Chudleigh and fellow researchers are currently working on a new Trust ‘History of a House’ book about Globe, which the current excavations will inform. The dig will also inform future archaeological excavations of Globe as a pivotal part of the historic town, and as a known site of enslavement. This week’s activities lay the groundwork for future in situ archaeological study of the spaces in which enslaved Bermudians lived and worked at Globe.

“BNT’s Heritage Education Coordinator, Anna Stevenson, has partnered with the Ministry of Education to present an overview of archaeology at school assemblies this week, after which Eastern primary schools and all middle schools are visiting the dig. The BNT field trips to Globe and surrounding World Heritage Site feature live tours, dig team demonstrations and chances for students get hands-on.”

The Trust’s Head of Cultural Heritage Dr. Charlotte Andrews said, “This week’s dig at Globe brings trained teams together with local volunteers and schools to unearth new discoveries about the Outstanding Universal Value of our World Heritage Site and Bermuda’s past. It’s a chance to ignite heritage imaginations and part of our ongoing work to collaboratively and sensitively reimagine sites of enslavement that the Trust manages across Bermuda.”

The spokesperson said, “The Trust’s Archaeological Research Committee invites the public to visit the dig this Friday and Saturday March 10th and 11th between 11:00am-2:00pm. And Dr. Jarvis is still looking for volunteers to help process finds this week. This is an opportunity for locals interested in archaeology to learn more about the field and play a role in researching Bermuda’s past.
