Erica Hawley says she is “proud” of her fifth-place finish in a strong elite women’s field in the Americas Triathlon Cup in Saint Peters, Missouri this weekend.
Hawley completed the sprint-distance race – 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and 5km run – in 1hr 2min 13sec, with splits of 10:24, 32:14 and 18.22.
The Bermudian was up against a decorated field, including race winner Katie Zaferes [1:00:08], a former world champion, and her United States compatriot Gwen Jorgensen [1:00:58], an Olympic champion and two-times world champion, who placed second. Olympian Amelie Kretz came third [1:01:31] ahead of fellow Canadian Dominika Jamnicy in fourth [1:02:06].
“Of course, I wanted to be at the pointer end of the pyramid, but getting beat by three Olympians/goats of the sport puts things into perspective,” Hawley wrote on Instagram.
“Katie Zaferes showing how it’s done leading from start to finish – just wow.
“Special shout-out to training pal Amelie Kretz for a well-earned third and, of course, to Dominika Jamnicky for always pushing me to my best performances. Was a great battle for fourth. Proud of myself for putting myself right in the mix.”
Bermuda was well represented at the event, as in addition to Hawley, Tyler Smith and Nicholas Pilgrim were in action in the men’s field.
