Pickleball Event Supports Eco Club Trip
Corporate teams — including Fidelis Insurance Group, AIG, BMA, Miller, AON, Ascot, Hiscox, Aegon and Hamilton Re – paddled it out against each other and Bermuda College Eco Club teams at The Reefs in support of a fundraising effort to help send students on a sustainability stewardship opportunity to Bahamas in May.
A spokesperson said, “The tournament was facilitated by Double C Pickleball who seamlessly managed a fun filled afternoon. Burrows and Lightbourn also generously donated a sampling station for participants to enjoy.
“The afternoon helped build community amongst corporate partners as well as Bermuda College students and staff. It was an opportunity to practice sustainability with as many products as possible being recycled or reused if possible. Prizes were also as sustainable as could be with the champions Fidelis in first place and AIG in second place winning Bermuda cedar trees which will help the club offset carbon emissions when travelling to Bahamas while also helping to increase Bermuda’s biodiversity. Cedar trees were kindly grown and donated by Kent and Liz Smith. Double C Pickleball also gifted the bottom two teams with a recyclable glass jar of pickles!”
Jacqui Smith, Fidelis Insurance Group representative and Pickleball team member, stated that “Fidelis Insurance Group was pleased to support the Bermuda College Eco Club fundraiser where members of our Bermuda office took part in a corporate pickleball tournament in support of a great cause. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards student led sustainability initiatives, both locally and internationally, making every serve count for a greener future.”
Eco Club President Kathryn Law said, “Hosting this type of event not only helps companies build team spirit but our own club got the chance to bond and get to know each other better. It was fun to learn a new sport with passionate people. She really enjoyed the guests’ energy and response to the Eco-friendly prizes.”
Amy Harvey, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Science and Bermuda College Eco Club Mentor, added that “BC Eco Club and our members are a very active part of the greater Bermuda community holding events that aim to raise awareness about critical environmental issues that affect both our local and global community. Our members are advocates that are passionate about making the difference. They work hard and I hope the Bermuda community will continue to support ongoing initiatives that we have. These events help us to achieve our mission of raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainable behaviours.”
A spokesperson added, “Proud partners of this event included Double C Pickleball, Burrows and Lightbourn, Rosewood, Misaki, Fit4Life, H2Osports and Flanagan’s Irish Pub.”
