Dage Minors Thrilled With Bronze Medal Win
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Bermuda middle-distance runner Dage Minors admits his overriding emotion was relief after winning the bronze medal in the 1,500 metres at the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador, El Salvador.
The 27-year-old claimed his first medal for Bermuda at a multi-sport competition after finishing third in last night’s race in 3min 45.12sec.
His achievement is all the more impressive considering his preparations were less than perfect, having picked up a knee injury in May, missing the USATF Bermuda Grand Prix and Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby.
“It’s finally hitting me,” Minors told Bernews. “It’s a big relief for me to perform [so well on the international stage].”
Minors, who came ninth in the 1,500 at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last summer, added: “I had a respectable performance at the Commonwealths, but coming here and getting a much-wanted medal – I’ll be forever grateful.”
Minors was well placed throughout the race and in fourth position heading into the all-important final lap.
“The plan was to give myself a chance of winning [the race] or grabbing a medal,” he added. “My build-up for the race wasn’t perfect, but I managed it best I could.
“My coach told me to stay in fourth, fifth. I wanted to be relaxed and composed. I was talking to myself throughout the race, telling myself it was easy.
“I wanted to give myself the best opportunity going into the bell lap.”
Bermp berms!! Big up yourself, Dage!
Well done! A credit to all the hard work. Keep it going.
