A spokesperson said, “On Friday, November 17, 2023, Raleigh Bermuda will be holding an island-wide “Anti-Gang Violence” Tag Day Campaign.

“Raleigh is asking all schools, workplaces, office, clubs, and social spaces to wear green to support Raleigh’s Anti-Gang Violence Campaign and to help raise funds for their youth programmes.

“Raleigh will also host a Special Candlelight Vigil Honouring All Lives Lost to Gang Violence. Light your candle at 9:00pm wherever you are. Tag @RaleighBermuda #RaleighStrong and please spread the word!”

Executive Director Dany Rodriguez says, “Violence is on the rise and Raleigh Bermuda is fighting for the future of our young people. Our youth are facing real dangers every day – depression, suicide, drugs, abuse, gang ties, and crime. We need to act now!”

The spokesperson said, “Why does Raleigh do the work we do? It has been reported that there are at least:

  • 19 gangs in Bermuda
  • over 350 gang members ranging from 12 – 40 years of age.
  • Over 1,000 affiliate gang members in the community
  • 71 murders since 2001
  • 294 confirmed firearm incidents
  • Children are actively recruited from as early as 8 years old, including girls.

“To tackle these issues, Raleigh Bermuda offers the “Brave: Anti-Violence” programme for high school students aged 14 to 17 to address violence as well as how to advocate and have important discussions about toxic and healthy relationships.

“Raleigh also has their “Venturers’ Scholarship” programme” for youth aged 17 – 24 where they have the opportunity of receiving a full scholarship to go on an overseas expedition to South Africa or Costa Rica.

“In 2011, Raleigh Bermuda mourned the loss of one of their alumni member Malcolm K. Outerbridge, who was 18 years old when he was tragically murdered and stabbed to death on the railway trail.

“In honour of Malcolm, in 2019 Raleigh Bermuda opened “Malcolm’s Room” to provide a safe space for young people, a refuge from abuse, harm, and toxic environments.

“Raleigh Bermuda is imploring the entire community join them in their Anti-Gang Violence Tag Day Campaign! To sign up your school, office, and company as supporters of the campaign please contact info@raleigh.bm or call 333-5678.
