Mia Fishel suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury yesterday [February 19] while training with the United States women’s national team on the eve of the Concacaf W Gold Cup.
Chelsea forward Fishel, whose father is Bermudian, has been replaced in the US squad by Alex Morgan, the San Diego Wave captain.
Chelsea confirmed the right knee injury today and said Fishel will be assessed by a specialist in the coming days before starting her rehabilitation with the Women’s Super League [WSL] club at Cobham.
Twila Kilgore, the US interim head coach, said: “I’m gutted for Mia, and I know the team and the entire staff is as well.
“She’s been very effective in camp and has worked hard to make an impact. Since she’s been getting call-ups to the national team, she’s shown a tremendous growth mindset, a desire to absorb information, and has been a total team player.
“I know she’ll come back strong and hopefully be in the mix for the next World Cup.”
Fishel, born in San Diego, California, joined Chelsea from Mexican club Tigres on a three-year contract in August, scoring once in ten appearances in the WSL this season.
She made her senior US debut as a substitute in a win over South Africa in September last year.
The US start their Gold Cup campaign against the Dominican Republic in Carson, California, today.
