BDA Highlights Link Between CKD & Diabetes

In recognition of March being Kidney Awareness Month, the Bermuda Diabetes Association [BDA] has emphasized “the strong relationship between Chronic Kidney Disease [CKD] and Diabetes.”

A spokesperson said, “In observance of World Kidney Day, the Bermuda Diabetes Association is hosting Chronic Kidney Disease screening on March 14 and 15th at the Hilton Hill Diabetes Centre. People with diabetes, hypertension, gout, or a family history of CKD are at higher risk of developing the disease. March screening appointments are full, but appointments are still available in April through June. Lori Rockhead, BDA’s Executive Director said “anyone who is at risk is encouraged to make an appointment at www.diabetes.bm. The screenings are free of charge.”

“Since 2023, the BDA, in collaboration with Carna Health, has offered CKD screenings free of charge to anyone who is at risk. The results thus far underscore the critical importance of early detection. By shedding light on these results, the Association aims to increase awareness of kidney health, contributing to improved health outcomes within our community.

“Dr. Salvatore Viscomi of Carna Health and Dr. Peter Topham of the Bermuda Hospitals Board will be discussing the screening results on Wednesday, March 13th, during an educational session hosted by the BDA. We’ve extended invitations to health professionals, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. Notably, the response has been overwhelming, and the educational session is at full capacity, highlighting the relevance of early detection and treatment of CKD in Bermuda.”
