[Updated] A press conference is being held this morning [Sept 19] to announce an Independent candidate, we will have additional coverage later on and in the meantime the live video is below.

Update: Dwight Jackson is announcing that he will be an independent candidate for Constituency 9 Smith’s West. This seat is currently held by Vance Campbell, who recently resigned from the PLP to join the OBA.

Update: A flyer handed out at the press conference said, “Dwight Jackson is a family man who is deeply concerned about the wellbeing of his young adult children, their futures, and the futures of all our children. He is worried about how his son is going to navigate social constructs that have seen so many perish. He has decided to run in Smith’s West to be a part of the change needed to ensure a better future and carve a better pathway forward.

“Dwight grew up in the Mount Hill area of Pembroke and attended Prospect Primary and Whitney Institute. Holds an undergraduate degree in Physical Education and a Master’s degree in Adaptive Physical Education and has been an educator for 27 years.

“During his extensive work experience in Bermuda, Mr. Jackson has served as a Bermuda Reserve Constable and is currently a Level 1 National football referee who is pursuing advanced referee qualifications.

“His local community involvement has encompassed being a Big Brother, PTA President (Francis Patton and Whitney Institute Middle School), VP of the National PTA, an Executive Rep for the Bermuda Union of Teachers, and the General Secretary for the Bermuda Trade Union Congress (BTUC) during the COVID austerity measures. He has also been a youth football coach for Hamilton Parish Workmen’s Club and has held an executive position at the Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club.

“Dwight is running for Constituency #9 in order to:

  • Make Bermuda economically affordable
  • Build a more sustainable energy platform
  • Help create an education curriculum for all
  • Promote all sport as a viable pathway for success

“He wants to see a nation that has its own identity and readily knows who we are. He is running as an independent to make a difference. His motto and life mantra is: “To lead, you must serve.”

    The JWS party…disguised as Independents.

Don’t forget the UBP began as independents, and then coalesced around a leader to become the UBP. There is nothing new under the sun.
