This “stirring Southern drama” received great reviews abroad and five stars and 100 roses from Bermuda audiences who have flocked to see this excellent full-length movie [1 hour 58 minutes], which was based on a true story. Produced by Bermuda’s own Wendy Tucker-Tannock, written and directed by Lynn Dow, with composer Anne Dudley, the setting is Summerton, South Carolina. The main stars in the show are Loretta Devine, Amy Madigan, Malynda Hale, Arielle Prepetit, Gary Ray Moore, Chantal Maurice, Nicky Buggs, Rocky Myers, and Mathew Greer, and the production company is Up the Road Films.

Ms. Tucker-Tannock established her footprint of excellence with short films, which built her confidence and skills to enter the big leagues. All of the qualities of a masterful movie that absorb you and touch your emotions are there:

  • excellent script
  • great music
  • outstanding real actors and actresses
  • a great director
  • a real location – Summerton

Bermuda itself has a growing list of land issues, from Tucker’s Town to derelict houses and delayed probate, so it was easy for mature audiences to identify with the issue at hand.

I will give you one line in order to whet your appetite without giving away the full content of the movie: “Bull Street follows LouEster Sadie Gibbs, a 39-year-old small-town personal injury lawyer whose mother died in childbirth.”

When you attend, you will listen intently to the subtle jokes, intense developments, and real-life portrayals by actors. It was brought to life by cast members:

  • Loretta Devine – grandmother [Mrs. Big Gal]
  • Amy Madigan – a judge
  • Arielle Prepetit – an Ivy League lawyer

Bull Street premiered in Bermuda at The Media Lounge – big comfortable seats – formerly The Neptune Theatre in Dockyard. It is definitely worth treating yourself to a great meal from the many restaurants in Dockyard and then catching the film. Check the ferry schedule for a beautiful ride in the Great and Little Sound to and from the venue.

At the end of the movie, Bull Street will be added to the salutations for the short, but growing, list of movies by Bermudians like Hustler’s Paradise.

Bermuda’s lights have been shining brightly in so many arenas, from academics to the Olympics, football, fashion, and more, and now this film. The film has been entered in the Sarasota Film Festival. Watch out for more local actors/actresses and executive producers on the horizon. We are indeed blessed.

I found Bermudian executive producer Wendy Tucker-Tannock to be a very modest and humble person. I was happy to meet her and shake the hand of a talented producer who is destined for greatness. It is no easy task, I am sure, at the top of the production hierarchy to source and secure financing for production and being a part of the creative decision-making process. Having her live, standing in front of us, giving an insight into the movie was an experience I will never forget.

If you have not seen this film, with a good social and ethical message, go and get a ticket and let her know that you are a fan.
