National Playground Safety Standards

  • Concern: The safety of playgrounds in Bermuda is compromised by inadequate safeguarding measures, particularly those exacerbated by our climate. Risks include dangerously hot equipment, damaged equipment, flooding, insufficient shading, lack of functional hygiene facilities, and more. These hazards pose significant risks to the health and safety of children, who are particularly vulnerable to environmental factors.
  • Demand: We demand the creation and enforcement of comprehensive national playground safety standards, tailored to Bermuda’s climate and enforced by professionals certified in playground safety standards.
  • Reasoning: Playgrounds should be safe havens where children can engage in physical activity, develop social skills, and enjoy their environment. However, without proper safety standards, playgrounds can/have become hazardous. Addressing both standard and climate-specific safety concerns is essential to protect children from harm. Certified professionals should be responsible for ensuring that playgrounds meet these standards, guaranteeing the highest level of safety.
  • Benefits: Implementing the suggested policies will result in safer playgrounds, reducing the risk of injury and heat-related illnesses among children. This will encourage more physical activity, contributing to better health and well-being. Additionally, parents will have greater peace of mind knowing that their children are playing in safe, well-maintained environments.

Proposed Policies:

  • Temperature Regulation: Use materials that minimize heat absorption for playground equipment to prevent burns and other heat-related injuries.
  • Climate-Resilient Infrastructure: Implement shaded areas, proper drainage systems, and accessible, hygienic bathrooms to protect children from the elements and safeguard their health.
  • Safety Surfaces: Utilize eco-friendly, heat-resistant surfaces that cushion falls, reducing the risk of injury.
  • Regular Inspections: Conduct safety inspections by certified professionals to ensure ongoing compliance with safety standards.
