“It’s important for our young people to maintain a strong connection and love for Bermuda, as they navigate their educational and professional journeys abroad, and I encourage them to bring their talents and expertise back home so that they can contribute to building a stronger, more vibrant Bermuda,” said the Premier David Burt after attending the annual London Office Dinner for Students and Recent Graduates last week.

A Government spokesperson said, “Last week, Premier Burt travelled to London [Nov. 18 – 22], to attend the Overseas Territories [OT] Joint Ministerial Council [JMC], as well as engage in meetings focusing on the financial services and banking sector.

“During the visit the Premier also attended the Bermuda Government’s London Office Annual Dinner for Students and Recent Graduates.

“The event hosted over 70 young Bermudians who asked probing questions and shared thought-provoking feedback such as: introducing legal structures that could assist victims of domestic abuse; addressing road traffic incidences and road fatalities; being involved in the voting process while overseas; and the importance of Government overcoming the education reform hurdles.

“Many students expressed gratitude for the chance to engage directly with the Premier and other senior officials from the Government of Bermuda.”

One student observed, “The event provided an invaluable opportunity to gain insight into the government’s current initiatives and long-term goals, as well as the broader landscape of opportunities available in Bermuda. It was a unique experience to learn directly from decision-makers.”

A Government spokesperson added, “Others emphasised the importance of the connections made throughout the evening.”

“The networking opportunities were exceptional. I was able to connect with several professionals and mature students who provided guidance on navigating my career path, offering advice and mentorship that I will carry forward in my professional journey,” said another attendee.

Premier Burt said, “In keeping with an annual tradition, I was pleased to spend time with our young students. They posed questions directly which helped foster an atmosphere that allowed for a mutual exchange of ideas.

“I also shared with them that Government has been working hard to better the lives of all in Bermuda. We discussed the positive strides Government is making in various areas, including the mortgage guarantee programme designed to support homeownership among young Bermudians, and the introduction of Bermuda’s corporate income tax framework that will enable the Government to provide further services which will enhance the quality of life for Bermudians.”

Bermuda London Office Director and UK Representative, Kimberley Durrant added, “Holding a networking dinner for students and graduates provides an opportunity for our youth to meet and share experiences with others living and studying in the UK. It also provides an opportunity to meet with Government officials to discuss their career aspirations and seek guidance. The London Office is planning to host events from early 2025 around specific key disciplines of interests to Bermudian students. Those interested should be reminded to register with the office.”

The occasion also coincided with the 15th Anniversary of the opening of Government of Bermuda’s London Office.

The Premier added, “For 15 years, the Government of Bermuda’s London Office has nurtured and facilitated the connection between young Bermudians and their home, ensuring that their voices are heard and their aspirations supported. The London Office has also provided significant support since 2009, not just to our young people, but to all Bermudian citizens, businesses and members of government visiting or travelling through the UK. All of Bermuda is extremely grateful for the London Office’s services and support.”

A Government spokesperson added, “During last week’s UK trip the Premier was accompanied by the Minister of Economy and Labour, Jason Hayward, Secretary to the Cabinet Marc Telemaque, Ministry of Economy and Labour Permanent Secretary Aideen Ratteray Pryse, Financial Secretary Chidozie Mr. Ofoego, Kimberley Durrant, UK Representative Bermuda’s London Office, and Brandon Sousa Deputy UK Representative.”
