MP Tucker On Senior Abuse Cases & More

“The Opposition is deeply alarmed by new data showing that reports of senior abuse in Bermuda have doubled in just three years,” OBA MP Robin Tucker said.

Ms Tucker said, “According to data provided by Ageing and Disability Services showing a dramatic escalation in senior abuse reports, this underscores a growing crisis affecting some of our most vulnerable citizens.

“Despite the troubling numbers, the Government has still not delivered a fully operational Office of the Public Guardian [OPG], an institution it first promised in the 2020 Throne Speech and again highlighted in 2025 as crucial to protecting seniors and adults who cannot manage their affairs independently.

“This failure has real consequences. Without an OPG, seniors at risk of physical, psychological, or financial abuse are left without the independent oversight and advocacy they urgently need. The Government has acknowledged that demand for public guardianship is rising due to Bermuda’s ageing population, yet years later, Bermudians are still waiting for the promised safeguards to materialize.

“The data, shows that the government ought to be acting with urgency to implement the Office of the Public Guardian with full legislative authority and staffing, to increase resources for Ageing and Disability Services, to address reported challenges with caseloads and timely intervention, and to prioritize senior protection as a matter of national urgency, not long‑term aspiration.

“Our seniors deserve more than promises — they deserve protection, dignity, and a government that acts.”
