Senator Douglas De Couto hosted his annual Senior Tea event this weekend at St. Mary’s Church Hall, featuring presentations from people including Marie Fay of Northstar Dementia, artist Ronnie Chameau and Kathleen Sharpe Kean.

A spokesperson said, “On Saturday 23 November Senator Douglas De Couto hosted his annual Warwick Northeast Seniors Tea, at St. Mary’s Church Hall. Also in attendance was Victoria Cunningham, OBA Candidate in Warwick West C28.

“Attendees had a presentation from Marie Fay, of NorthStar Dementia and the Dementia Bermuda charity. Ms. Fay gave an overview of what dementia is, and how it affects both the person with dementia as well as caregivers, especially family members. She discussed ways to cope with dementia and lessen its impact, including ensuring an active lifestyle and taking advantage of resources like daily activity programs [https://dementiabermuda.bm/events].

“Ms. Fay estimates there are as many as 3,000 people in Bermuda with dementia, a number that will only increase as Bermuda’s population ages, highlighting the importance of understanding how this disease works and affects us.

“Kathleen Sharpe Keane gave a short presentation on the importance of an “enduring power of attorney”, a document that can ensure your affairs are managed to your wishes by a trusted person, should be incapacitated for health reasons. She also discussed other important topics about planning for the future – like keeping copies of important documents in a well-known place.

“Finally, attendees enjoyed an engaging talk from Ronnie Chameau, the Bermudian artist well-known for her dolls made from natural materials like banana leaves. Ms. Chameau explained the roots of the doll-making tradition, and why they are an important part of Bermuda’s history, including items like onion baskets and Bermuda hats which were coveted even in London.

“Ms. Chameau talked about how she got into doll-making, and described the process of making her dolls and angel tree ornaments. She also generously provided an angel ornament that was raffled off to one of the lucky seniors!

“Senator De Couto thanks Marie Fay and Ronnie Chameau for volunteering their time and expertise, St. Mary’s Church for use of their hall, Marketplace for supplying the sandwiches, and all of the volunteers for their baked goods and who made the event happen.”
