BZS Wild Encounter “Nature & Art: Bluebirds”
The BZS WILD Encounter “Nature & Art: Bluebirds” event will be held on Sunday [Feb 9] with a second session on Sunday, March 9.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Zoological Society [BZS] next WILD Encounter teams up with art teacher and environmental educator Jen Lang of Wee Thrive to spark curiosity through nature and art, to encourage our young people to learn the important role we have in the survival of the Bermuda Bluebird.
“Guided by Ms Jen, students will use chalk, paint and fabric to blend and create to bring to life their own version of the artwork ‘Bluebird in Cedar,’ which will be used as inspiration.
“During the workshop, the young artists will also adventure to Trunk Island [weather dependent*] aboard the BZS boat Callista to engage them in a learning opportunity about Bermuda’s Bluebirds — their habits, nesting season, predators and the special man-made boxes that they call home.
“Bluebirds are one of Bermuda’s few native breeding birds and were once observed in flocks of fifty or more until their habitats began to shrink and their fiercest competitor, the House Sparrow, was introduced.
“Thanks to the introduction of the Bluebird nesting boxes by the Bermuda Audubon Society and subsequent interest in creating these specially designed habitats, Bermuda continues to support a small population of Bluebirds. This workshop will be a great opportunity to inspire the next generation to care for our beloved Bluebirds and continue to see them thrive.
“BZS WILD Encounter Nature & Art: Bluebirds takes place on Sunday, 9 February from 9:00 a.m. – 12.00 p.m. in the BZS Classrooms at BAMZ. The cost is $80 for Members and $90 for Non-members with all supplies included. There will also be a second date to take place on Sunday, 9 March.
