A media conference launched events marking the 66th anniversary of the 1959 Theatre Boycott on June 30, with additional events being held today [July 2].

A spokesperson said, “A media conference was held at Boyles Discount Store on June 30th, launching this week’s appreciation celebration for the 66th anniversary of the success of the Theatre Boycott. The venue offers a panoramic view of the hub in which most of the rallying of supporters of the boycott took place – near three movie theatres.

“Included here is 99-year-old Izola Harvey who, along with her late husband Gerald, were members of the Progressive Group. She was quite pregnant during the boycott, but insisted on doing her part and more.

“Also here is Leroy Looby, who was 22-years-old when – on the second night of the boycott – he joined a few other intrepid souls who picketed in front of Island Theatre.

“Others assembled here are Virginia Phillips and Madree Sampson, daughters of the late Austin Wilson, a co-founder of the Bermuda Workers Association. The BWA campaigned for social justice during the late 1940s. William Richardson represents the ‘Garage Gang,’ a group which kept the embers going following the death of Dr Gordon.”

John Barritt – former MP, journalist, and lawyer – said, “I was invited here in light of my uncle, Robert Barritt, having done a celebratory painting capturing the boycott. Uncle Robert went on in 1960-61 to become involved in the Committee for Universal Suffrage, which eventually facilitated the establishment of the right to vote for all Bermudians.”

Mayor Charles Gosling said, “I just figured out that I have been collaborating with the initiative to highlight the Theatre Boycott for the past 25 years, recognizing the role that this milestone has in the history of the island. It is an honour to be here to celebrate the likes of Izola Harvey for her efforts to create a better Bermuda – not only for her own children and grandchildren, but all of the upcoming generations.”

The spokesperson said, “The celebration will include the following:

  • Lunchtime Wednesday – July 2nd from 12.30pm to 1.30pm, interactive gathering at the Cathedral Hall;
  • Special guest Rev Kingsley Tweed reflects on the boycott rally, and some piano and song.
  • Interactive dialogue facilitation team: Nekesha Holdipp, Sandy Butterfield, Darius Richardson, and Glenn Fubler
  • Harbour Night celebration on July 2nd from 7.00pm to 7.00pm
  • Music presentations; Ed Christopher and Willard Burch
  • Skit on boycott: ensemble includes Kathy Kawaley; Michelle Cooper; Nikita Robinson; Leighton Rochester; Richie Latham; and Rotimi Martins
