Somerset Retain Cup Match Trophy With Draw
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Somerset have retained the coveted Cup Match trophy after the annual Classic against St George’s ended in a draw at the Wellington Oval today [August 1].
St George’s resumed day two on 176 for five, 115 runs behind Somerset, with Delray Rawlins leading the charge for the challengers before being removed just two runs short of his century.
Rawlins was unfortunate to be dismissed after playing on from a delivery by Somerset seam bowler Malachi Jones.
Teenager Luke Horan showcased his talent with an entertaining 20 before being caught by Kamau Leverock off the bowling of Jones.
St George’s eventually declared on 243 for nine off 40.1 overs.
Leverock claimed four for 59, while Jones enjoyed figures of three for 56.
Somerset started their second innings with a 48-run lead but were reduced to 47 for three before captain Terryn Fray and Alex Dore steadied the ship, guiding them to 114 for four.
Fray eventually fell for 57, trapped leg before by left-arm spin bowler Rawlins.
Dore was out soon after for 24, caught by Zeko Burgess off Rawlins. Dion Stovell stretched the holders’ lead with a brisk 37 before being dismissed by Isaiah O’Brien, caught Burgess, with the score 181 for six.
With the score on 209 for seven, five minutes left before the enforced close of play, the teams agreed to leave the pitch much to the delight of the Somerset faithful.

The only competition in the world where you can keep the trophy after a draw. Bermuda is truly another world. SMH!
Possibly the only game you can play for 2 days, and nobody wins.
Weird take. Many Test Match series featuring a trophy will see the trophy retained by the holders if it’s drawn. Do people even follow cricket around here?
Well it ank about the match right???
