Charles Zuill Exhibition & Book Launch
Masterworks Museum will present ‘Charles Zuill: Portals to Another Dimension’ a solo exhibition and accompanying book launch, opening on September 12th.
A spokesperson said, “On Friday, September 12, 2025, Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art will proudly present a landmark solo exhibition by one of Bermuda’s most visionary and influential artists, Charles Zuill.
“Curated by Lisa Howie and in collaboration with Charles Zuill, the exhibition entitled Charles Zuill: Portals to Another Dimension, will be on display in the Rick Faries Gallery at Masterworks Museum, located in the Botanical Gardens, from September 12 to November 4, 2025. This exhibition will showcase a collection of new work that highlights Zuill’s lifelong dedication to abstract expression and experimentalism.
“Born in 1935 and raised on a farm in Bermuda where the roots of his experimental artmaking took hold, Charles Zuill was influenced by local artist Charles Lloyd Tucker and Swiss German artist Paul Klee, amongst others. He later earned a PhD in Art History from New York University. Upon returning to Bermuda, he devoted his life to nurturing the local arts scene – teaching at Bermuda College, and playing a foundational role in the Bermuda Society of Arts, the Bermuda Arts Council, and the Bermuda National Gallery.
“To coincide with the exhibition, Masterworks is also proud to announce the release of his new book under the same name, Charles Zuill: Portals to Another Dimension by Black Pony Publishing. The publication, which includes 147 plates [or images of artwork] offers a vivid look at Zuill’s journey as an artist from realism to abstraction. Featuring critical essays by curators and testimonials from local artists and cultural leaders, the book is a celebration of his legacy as an artist, educator, art critic, and cultural visionary.
“Thanks to an anonymous sponsor, 100 complimentary copies of the book will be distributed to local schools, libraries, and senior homes. Seed funding for the project was generously provided by the Bermuda Arts Council.”
“Charles Zuill’s impact on Bermuda spans generations,” states exhibition curator and founding director of Black Pony Gallery and Black Pony Publishing, Lisa Howie. “As a visionary artist, dedicated educator and empathetic art critic, Charles has nurtured countless visual artists, while contributing significantly to the art organizations that make up Bermuda’s cultural ecology.
“Charles has also been a champion of my endeavours to elevate global awareness of the immense contemporary visual art talent in Bermuda and the wider Atlantic World. Curating this exhibition and launching his book at the same time has been a most fulfilling experience. It is my sincere hope that our community will join me in celebrating Charles’s achievements and take time to explore his unique visual expressions presented in both the exhibition and the book.”
Executive Director of Masterworks Museum, Risa Hunter, shares “It is an honour for Masterworks to present this landmark exhibition celebrating Charles Zuill, whose passion and commitment have profoundly shaped Bermuda’s cultural landscape. This show and accompanying book not only highlight his extraordinary artistic journey but also ensure that his legacy continues to inspire generations to come. We are deeply grateful to Charles for his artistry and to Lisa for her curatorial insight, whose combined efforts have made this exhibition possible.”
