Local entrepreneur Mickey Robinson, promoter of Saturday Night Live music events, hit the bullseye again on Saturday, September 27th with a briefcase of new acts that had the packed hall dancing and singing. His golden gloves plan wins every time and is the reason why the shows continue to sell out.

Just when some felt he had too much on the plate, they concluded that it was a night to remember with a three course meal from Roy’s, a new band and singers whose chosen songs, while dated, were a passion for the crowd of well-dressed connoisseurs of a good night on the town.

The God Brothers, Desta Zion, and Kieran Bradshaw, to say it plain and simple, were a hit. Their songs touched the hearts of the audience and you would have thought they brought a choir of 100 when they sang a few songs by Bobbi Caldwell, Isley Brothers, Bill Withers, Beres Hammond, Teddy Swims, The Spinners, Barrington Levy, Chronixx, and Desta’s original, “Musical Healing.”

Desta Zion has a deep and rich voice that captivated the crowd. He is also an accomplished guitarist and songwriter. Earlier this year, he teamed up with Kieran and performed for the Corporation’s Summer Party at Victoria Park. They complimented each other on every song, which indicated that they could have a bright future in Bermuda as a duo and it would be easy to have a fan club based on the enthusiasm of the audience.

The night was still early and the standard had been set. Mickey’s dream of supporting Bermuda’s clubs with showcase acts had come true. The rest of the evening consisted of the following groups and singers:

Retro Fit [new] have a very bright future given the passion and expertise of each band member. We need more bands like this and I hope they stay together. Zayne Bean [keys], Dwayne Foster [sax], Troy Washington [drums] and Zaren Bennett [bass] did two excellent sets that will push their name to the front. Their religious and soul songs had a magnetic impact on the audience, who gave them a standing ovation for songs like:

  • Just the Two of Us [Bill Withers]
  • I Wanna Know [Joe]
  • Can We Talk For a Minute [Tevin Campbell]

Additional acts included:

  • Anthony Darrell and Kat. He is a veteran and she is a novice. The audience enjoyed their selections.
  • Latosha Codrington sang Tomorrow [The Winans], How Deep is Your Love [The Bee Gees], and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You [Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio]. She was well received.
  • Kat returned with “Mr. Soul,” her brother, Willis Steede. They did Redemption Song, Let’s Stay Together, I Wanna Give You Some Lovin’, and Ordinary People.

Just when I thought the night was over, a group of line dancers appeared and after a few dances, DJ Mikie B ensured that Mickey’s night of dinner, dance, and entertainment was par excellence.
