Police Urge Public Safety This New Year

The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] is urging the public to continue practicing safety and responsibility during the upcoming New Year’s holiday weekend, as officers maintain a high-profile presence to prevent crime and ensure a safe festive season.

Acting Superintendent Alexander Rollin said, “The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] once again wishes to thank the public for their cooperation and support during Christmas holiday weekend, which remained free of any major incidents or acts of anti-social behaviour.

“As we approach the New Year’s Holiday weekend, we are asking that you continue to work with us to ensure a continued safe and enjoyable festive season.

“The public can expect the current high-profile police presence to remain in place as we provide public reassurance and work to deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour. We are well prepared to respond to and deal with calls for assistance by members of the public to incidents of crime or disorder.”

“These efforts will be bolstered with increased traffic initiatives, particularly as it relates to impaired driving. Roadside Sobriety Checkpoints are in effect and will be enforced. Officers will also be conducting licenced premises checks throughout the evening. If you plan on having a few, book transportation or rely on a designated driver. We understand that our stepped up roads policing activity may create some inconvenience but this is in the interest of public safety.

“On New Year’s Day there will be a strong presence island wide along with a focus on the eastern end of the island for the football games. Go out and show your support for your respective teams, but please do so responsibly.

“Our intention is to maintain order and provide reassurance to the public while they celebrate the coming new year. We would much prefer there is compliance by members of the public rather than our officers having to arrest and charge anyone.

“However, when and where required, we will decisively address any acts of criminality or anti-social behaviour.

“We wish to take this opportunity to wish all residents of Bermuda a happy, healthy, safe, prosperous 2026 and we look forward to continuing to partner with you as we all work to make Bermuda safer.

“Let us embrace the spirit of the new year with kindness, respect and safe passage for all in the community.”
