The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute has opened entries for the 2026 Young Reporters for the Environment National Competition.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] is proud to announce the return of the Young Reporters for the Environment [YRE] National Competition, now entering its fourth year in Bermuda. As the National Operator for the Foundation for Environmental Education [FEE] programmes in Bermuda, BUEI leads the delivery of the YRE programme and its Environmental Journalism Competition, empowering young people aged 11-25 to investigate and communicate environmental issues through media.

“The competition encourages participants to submit original work in article writing, photography, podcasts, or video reportage. Through YRE’s four-step methodology, [investigating an environmental issue, researching solutions, creating a media piece, and sharing it with the community] students develop critical thinking, communication, and storytelling skills while becoming informed advocates for the environment.

“This year’s theme, Food Security and Climate Change, is an issue that affects communities worldwide. Climate change is already influencing how food is grown, produced, and distributed, with impacts ranging from extreme weather affecting crops to changing ocean conditions that influence fisheries. For island communities like Bermuda, these challenges highlight the importance of sustainable food systems, responsible consumption, and innovative solutions that can strengthen resilience. Through their reporting, young people can explore these connections and highlight stories, challenges, and solutions within their own community.

“BUEI encourages young storytellers, photographers, filmmakers, and curious minds to get involved. Whether your passion lies in writing, visual storytelling, or multimedia, this competition offers a platform to share your perspective and contribute to a global conversation about sustainability and climate action.

“Entries must be submitted by April 16. Winning submissions in each category will go on to represent Bermuda in the YRE International Competition, placing local voices on a global stage!

“To learn more about the programme, visit the YRE Page on BUEI’s website [www.BUEI.org], where you can find details of this year’s competition, as well as resources for educators who are interested in exploring this competition with their students. “Your voice matters. Help tell the story of our environment and the solutions that can protect it for the future.”
