Health Minister Kim Wilson marked World Asthma Day by highlighting Bermuda’s progress in asthma care while urging continued awareness, support and access to treatment for those living with the condition.

Minister Wilson said, “Today, Bermuda joins countries around the world in marking World Asthma Day, dedicated to raising awareness, improving care, and supporting every person living with asthma.

“As Minister of Health, this issue is not only a professional priority for me, but also a deeply personal one.

“As a parent of two children who experienced childhood asthma, I understand firsthand the fear, uncertainty, and constant vigilance that comes with managing this condition.

“My family, like so many others in Bermuda, benefited greatly from the guidance, education, and practical tools provided by Open Airways.

“Their support helped us navigate those early years with confidence and gave my children the foundation to manage their asthma effectively.

“I am therefore especially pleased to stand with Open Airways, whose dedication over the past 29 years has transformed how asthma is understood and managed across our community.

“Their work has empowered thousands of residents with the knowledge and tools needed to breathe easier and live healthier lives.

“Asthma is a chronic lung condition that affects people of all ages and backgrounds. It can be frightening, limiting, and at times life-threatening. But it is also a condition that can be effectively managed with the right education, treatment, and support.

“Globally, more than 250 million people live with asthma, and tragically, over 450,000 deaths occur each year, many of which are preventable.

“Here in Bermuda, an estimated 8,000 people are living with asthma, including approximately one in six school-aged children and one in ten adults.

“While we have made progress, asthma remains one of the leading reasons for visits to the Emergency Department.

“Since the establishment of Open Airways nearly three decades ago, hospital admissions for asthma have fallen by more than 80 percent.

“This is an extraordinary achievement and a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished through education, early intervention, and strong community partnerships.

“But we cannot become complacent. Asthma is still widely misunderstood, and too many people continue to struggle with proper management. No one in Bermuda should suffer from a condition that can be controlled.

“As we observe World Asthma Day 2026, let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting one another, strengthening awareness, and ensuring that every person, especially our children, has access to the care and information they need.

“Together with Open Airways and our dedicated health professionals, we will continue working toward a future where asthma no longer limits any life. Thank you.”
