Endeavour, a Bermuda charity, runs free inclusive sailing programmes that build confidence and skills for young people, including neurodiverse students.

A spokesperson said, “Endeavour is a registered charity and non-profit that continues to create meaningful opportunities for young people across Bermuda through inclusive, hands-on learning experiences on and off the water. By engaging diverse youth in sailing and experiential education, Endeavour helps diverse youth build confidence, develop life skills, and discover their potential in a supportive and empowering environment.

“At the heart of Endeavour’s mission is a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. All school programmes are offered free of charge, ensuring young people of all backgrounds, skills, and abilities have the opportunity to participate. Endeavour promotes inclusion within sailing and the broader maritime industry by engaging diverse youth in experiential learning focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics [STEAM], ocean conservation, and Bermuda’s maritime heritage, while fostering teamwork, communication, resilience, and self-confidence.

“A key example of this commitment is Endeavour’s No Limits Sailing Programme, launched in 2017 to provide inclusive, experiential learning opportunities for public school students on the autism spectrum. Autism, also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder [ASD], encompasses a broad range of differences in communication, social interaction, sensory processing, and learning styles. Individuals on the autism spectrum may experience and engage with the world in unique ways, bringing diverse strengths, perspectives, and approaches to communication, learning, and problem-solving. “Endeavour’s No Limits Sailing Programme is designed to recognise and support these unique differences through adaptive, hands-on learning experiences that encourage participation, confidence, and personal growth.

“During the 2025–2026 school year, Endeavour engaged its largest ‘No Limits’ cohort to date, welcoming 64 students aged 5–17 and 42 teachers from six public schools across Bermuda. Participating schools included Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy, Dellwood Middle School, Paget Primary, West End Primary, West Pembroke Primary, and The Berkeley Institute.”

Endeavour’s Executive Director, Jennifer Pitcher, said, “At Endeavour, inclusiveness is central to everything we do, and we are committed to ensuring neurodiverse learners are fully supported in ways that recognise and respond to their individual strengths and needs. Every student brings something unique to their learning journey, and it is a privilege to witness their growth and potential unfold.

“We strive to create an environment where curiosity is encouraged, confidence is strengthened, and every achievement is recognised. When students feel understood, supported, and included, they do more than develop new skills—they begin to recognise what they are truly capable of achieving.”

The spokesperson said, “Parents and teachers consistently report that participation in the programme helps students develop important life skills, including increased confidence, improved peer interaction and a greater ability to adapt to new environments and experiences.”

Ms. Esthefani Alcantara, a parent of a No Limits sailor, shared, “I want to thank the entire team for such an amazing experience; my son truly enjoyed the programme and gained so much confidence on the water.”

Freda Trimm, ASD Teacher at West End Primary School, said, “A heartfelt thank you to the Endeavour team for creating such a meaningful experience for our students. Your instructors welcomed every child with patience, respect, and encouragement, ensuring all students felt included, valued, and capable.

“Through hands-on sailing activities and thoughtful teaching approaches, they built confidence, independence, and joy in our students. What stood out the most was how your instructors used differentiated approaches, meeting each child where they were and supporting them in a way that allowed them to succeed. Your instructors proved to be outstanding mentors and role models whose impact will stay with our children for years to come.”

West End Primary teacher, Mainey Talbot, added, “Thank you Endeavour staff, for always being so supportive and fully engaged with the students. I’m still smiling at how committed you all were at staying in character as super heroes. Your energy and dedication truly made the experience unforgettable. We deeply appreciate your hard work and everything you do to ensure our students feel safe, included and inspired.”

Marsha Simas, teacher at Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy, shared, “Endeavour always has a team of young people who are patient, kind and willing and very knowledgeable about what they do and sharing their experiences.”

Jah-Shon Smith, Endeavour’s East Chief Instructor, said, “We love seeing students’ joy and excitement, especially when they are trying something completely new. Many students arrive at Endeavour feeling nervous or hesitant about new experiences, new people, and a different learning environment. Our team is committed to helping each student feel comfortable, working at their own pace in a safe and supportive setting.

“With guidance from their teachers and our instructors, students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, build confidence, and strengthen important social and communication skills. We are incredibly proud of the progress they make throughout the programme.”

Cristian Roque, Endeavour’s West Chief Instructor added, “It is inspiring to watch students build their self-esteem as they discover what they can accomplish both on and off the water. It is especially rewarding to see their excitement when something they are experiencing truly connects with them as they engage with sensory activities and hands-on learning.

“We aim to ensure that all learning is as hands-on as possible, with repetition that helps students make meaningful connections. Whether students are steering boats, learning to rig, exploring the water through sensory experiences, or participating in team activities, they are developing motor skills, self-awareness, and confidence while building meaningful connections with the world around them.”

Mrs. Pitcher added, “We are deeply grateful for the partnership and support of our education partners and teachers, whose dedication and expertise continue to inspire our work. Through collaboration and a shared passion for inclusive learning, this programme continues to thrive and make a lasting difference in the lives of Bermuda’s young people. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the extraordinary students and their families for placing their trust in us. They are at the heart of everything we do and the inspiration behind our commitment to this work.”

The spokesperson said, “Endeavour’s programmes would not be possible without the collective support of our valued donors, partners, and supporters, whose contributions enable us to positively impact young lives across Bermuda.

“Endeavour extends deepest gratitude to our founding lead sponsor Orbis Investments, as well as Arch Capital Group Ltd. and PwC Bermuda, for their partnership and commitment of Endeavour’s work in support of Bermuda’s youth.
