Bermuda Delegation Attends Lyme Regis Event
A Bermuda delegation joined an Admiral Sir George Somers Commemoration Parade in Lyme Regis, UK, marking 30 years of “twinning” with St George’s.
The Lyme Regis Town Council said, “From the shores of Bermuda to the seafront in Lyme Regis. The Lyme Regis / St George’s Twinning Association hosted the delegation from Bermuda in a very special Admiral Sir George Somers Commemoration Parade, which also marked the 30th anniversary of the twinning relationship between the two communities.
“The two towns were officially twinned on 25 July 1996 and each year Somers Day is marked with a parade and ceremony in Lyme Regis. Somers Day honours former Lyme Regis mayor and West Dorset MP, Sir George Somers, who founded the island of Bermuda in 1609 when he was shipwrecked there.
“A commemoration stone was unveiled in the gardens of the Alexandra Hotel before the civic parties of the two towns paraded through Langmoor and Lister Gardens and onto the historic Cobb.
“As the parade passed the RNLI Station, the delegation paid tribute to Lyme Regis RNLI for 200 years of life-saving service at sea.
“The Lyme Regis Gig Club formed a guard of honour with their oars on the Cobb, as the parade passed through, before the commemoration ceremony took place at the harbour with the mayor of St George’s, Cllr Quniell Francis JP and the mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Philip Evans MBE, both paying tribute.
“The celebration recognises the maritime history and connections Lyme Regis has forged over the centuries of its historic significance as a port and harbour.”
