Photos: 2010 Peppercorn Ceremony

April 21, 2010

One of Bermuda’s longstanding traditions having existed since 1816, the Peppercorn Ceremony took place this morning on King’s Square in St Georges.

Full of pomp and circumstance involving the Bermuda Regiment and Police, the Governor arrives in St Georges to accept the rent of one peppercorn from the Freemasons which covers the annual rent for the State House.

The State House was built in 1620, and was used for the General Assembly of Bermuda until 1816, when the capital moved to Hamilton. The government of the day then rented the building for 1 peppercorn a year, an agreement which still continues to this day.

Numerous MP’s attended, and various dignitaries arrived with great ceremony including the Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva, Mayor of St Georges Kenny Bascome, Acting Premier Paula Cox, and Governor Sir Richard Gozney. As tradition dictates, the Governor arrives in a Bermuda style horse-drawn carriage, and his arrival is marked by a 17-gun salute.
