Champion Boxer Nikki Bascome Returns Home
Nikki Bascome returned home tonight [July 12] after winning the welterweight division at the Platinum Gloves Tournament in Florida. The 19-year-old won his first fight via a points decision over a Haitian fighter, knocked out an American boxer in the second fight, and beat a Mexican fighter to take the title.
Nikki, who overcame somewhat troubled teen years to go on to excel, is in hard training and hopes to represent the island at the 2012 Olympics. He was accompanied on the trip by legendary boxing coach Allan ‘Forty’ Rego, and was welcomed at the airport by boxing coaches Charles Wade and Quinton Mallory as well as Sports Minister Glenn Blakeney, Minister Colonel David Burch and Director of Youth, Sport & Recreation Norbert Simons.
Nikki is next set to fight at the CAC Championships in Puerto Rico, where he will be part of the largest ever team sent by Bermuda. Fellow boxer Ja’Nos Lindsay will also represent the island.
A long-standing dispute between the Bermuda Amateur Boxing Association and Mr. Rego will prevent him from accompanying Nikkii Bascome to the CAC Games, however Mr Wade and Mr Mallory will travel with the team. Nikki and Mr Rego are pictured below at the airport tonight:
