Last Night: Stop-n-Searches On Parsons Roads

October 2, 2010

Last night [Oct 1] at approximately 8:30pm, approximately twenty Police officers were stationed on Parson’s Road, in the the area just past TCD. Officers were pulling over vehicles randomly searching a cross-section of people. While some received a cursory search, other commuters received more detailed searches included the usage of a sniffer dog, physical patdowns, and having their vehicles inspected in-depth.

The scene was notable in that everyone appeared to be extremely cooperative, as all interraction between the Police officers and commuters being stopped appeared to be extremely calm and polite. During our twenty minutes on the scene we saw one young man arrested, which was also conducted without incident.

Following an outbreak of firearm activity last week Thursday which saw three firearm incidents in one day, there was a heightened Police presence on the streets last weekend, which resulted in 232 stop and searches, 61 of which culminated in an arrest.

Assistant Commissioner of Police David Mirfield said earlier this week that “It is not the intention of the Bermuda Police Service to inconvenience the law abiding Bermudian. What is our intention is to do everything in our powers to disrupt and dismantle criminal gangs. If that means we stop and search more people then we will; if that means we stop and search cars, motorcycles and any other vehicle, then we will.”

I would like to take this oppunity to thank the police for what they are doing, for I and my family are some of those going around Bermuda feeling very unsafe and this is not a good thing in our own homeland.
I would like to suggest while the police are at it for them to check peoples status to be sure they are not here illegally.
I feel a lot of this crime is imported into Bermuda. If anyone is to be found here illegally then they must be sent back to their respective country.
    Thank You,
