Early Morning Sailboat Rescue

December 16, 2010

Early this morning [Dec 16] the sailboat ‘Summer Delight’ was rescued after the person aboard made a distress call to the Bermuda Maritime Operation Centre at 4:30am, after the boat dragged her anchor and became grounded near Smith’s Island. The boat had one person aboard, and sustained heavy damage to the keel and rudder.

Officials describe the conditions at the time as quite “treacherous,” with winds were gusting to 50 knots at the time and three-foot seas were reported. The pilot boat St. David’s came to the rescue and towed the sailboat to Ordnance Island, where it is presently docked.
