Container Ship Diverts to Assist Sailor

genoe expressAt approximately 8:50am this morning [Nov 27], the 26 foot sailboat ‘Summer Delight’ with one person aboard made contact with local officials saying the boat had suffered damage to the sails and requested assistance.

The sailor was traveling from Nova Scotia, Canada to Bermuda, and made the call when he was located approximately 47 nautical miles north-east of Bermuda.

Contact was made from the sailboat via ham radio enthusiasts to Bermuda Martime Operation Center.

The container vessel Genoa Express [pictured], which co-incidentally is Bermuda-flagged, diverted to the scene to act as a communication platform.

The lone sailor was found fit and well, declined to abandon his vessel and continued on his voyage to Bermuda. The Genoa Express, which was en route from Georgia, USA to Sardinia, Italy, also continued on its journey.
