April 18, 2011

Trey Whaley, a Primary two student at Warwick Academy, is the 2011 winner of the BELCO Bird Kite Safety Poster Competition.

2011 Poster Competition Winner Trey Whaley, mother, Melanie Whaley & BELCO Bird

BELCO Spokeswoman, Jessica Binns said “Trey was presented with a $500 grand prize donation for his school. He also received a special Bermuda-made kite for winning the contest. The four foot kite was specially made for him by BELCO Fitter Apprentice, Corrie Dillas. Trey’s poster was chosen as Best Overall Kite Safety Message of 194 entries sent in by other local Primary One and Primary Two students”.

The art competition is just one part of BELCO’s 25-year-old annual Kite Safety Campaign to promote safe kite making and flying. In February and March, BELCO Kiteman Cornell Dunkley and Jessica Binns and Deana Bailey of External Relations & Corporate Communications visited each of the Island’s 25 Primary Schools. This year more than 1,400 primary one and primary two students enjoyed the BELCO Bird Kite Safety Video followed by an electrical safety talk and demonstration of Linesmen’s gear by Mr. Dunkley.

BELCO’s Kite Safety Campaign comes to an end on Good Friday, when the BELCO Bird will visit safe kite flying locations around the island.

The following students were also winners in the Poster Competition. Students were judged according to their year level per school, on the following categories: “Best Safety Message” and “Most Beautiful”.

All winners receive a certificate and a ribbon for their efforts. Certificates and ribbons will be sent to each winner’s school. Winning posters will be displayed on Belco.bm.

BELCO Spokeswoman, Jessica Binns tells us that “All of the posters will also be on display in the lobby of BELCO’s Head Office on Serpentine Road through May 6. Please feel free to come in and view them anytime from 9am – 5pm”.
