Upcoming: Debate On The Economy

September 28, 2011

Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Kim Wilson today announced that the Ministry has partnered with the Association of Bermuda International Business Companies, Bermuda Employers Council and the Bermuda Hotel Association to host a public forum on the economy.

The forum, to be entitled ‘The Great Debate: You and the Economy’ is intended to engage the general public in a discussion about the economy as it relates to the value of foreign revenue, where it comes from, how it circulates through the economy and the steps that Bermuda must take to retain and grow its earnings.

The event will take place at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Thursday, October 6th, 2011 at 5:30 p.m.

Richard Winchell, Executive Director of the Association of Bermuda International Business Companies said: “By getting the public involved we hope they will support our collective efforts as we work together to put in place the kind of reform that would make Bermuda more attractive to foreign investors in an effort to create new jobs and grow the economy.”

A panel of local business and union leaders will make brief presentations before opening the forum to the public for questions and comments.

Immediately following the general session, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry will host two breakout sessions, one exclusively for unemployed carpenters and tradesmen and the other for unemployed international business professionals.

Minister Wilson said: “My goal is to use these sessions to hear the concerns that unemployed persons in these two key areas are having with respect to their job search efforts.”

“Several recruitment agencies have also agreed to be on hand to assist with the displaced international business personnel. Meanwhile, Bermuda’s carpenters are experiencing some unique challenges and I am keen to meet one-on-one with this group.”

Keith Jensen, President of the Bermuda Employers Council said: “Government is supporting strategies to attract new business and we need to work together to create new jobs. It is important that all sectors of the community attend this important event.”

it’s a pity Government did not work with these groups for the past 10 years … our problems would not have been as severe as they are now.

  2. Shaking the Head says:

I agree with Chart. Further until Bermuda has a Government comprised of MPs/Ministers who understand what it means to run a succesful business nothing will change, as this Government didn’t know how they got in this mess, and are now appealing to the public for help to Bermuda out. Unfortunately they won’t listen.

  3. Sandgrownan says:

Well, it’s better than nothing. Even better would be if the PLP resigned on account of being utter failures. Better than that, would be the repealing of idiotic legislation and removal of red tape.

  4. Allan G says:

Bernews please stream and is there a way to get questions from the online crowd! They need the 35 and unders perspective however this is a school night. Please help the organizers offer this!

    • bernews says:

Assuming the organizers say its okay to livestream it, we will carry it live. Only hitch is we aren’t exactly CNN with a satellite truck or anything, we live stream off a mobile connection, so until the actual moment we can only be around 95% sure the stream will go off.

      • 32n64w says:

Maybe ask Digicel/Transact to sponsor a live stream to improve you chance(s) for success?

If they’re underwriting the service one would hope they have a vested interest in ensuring its satisfactory outcome.

        • bernews says:

Digicel is always very cool to us, so that isn’t a bad thought.

Overall issue is really more access to a secure connection, meaning if we are trying to stream from certain places – like outdoors – we have no choice but to use a low MB mobile connection given our equipment limitations. Sometimes we ‘borrow’ the venue’s internet access, and must say that is way better.

In this case, we are hoping to get access to a landline connection at the venue.

Election must be in the air, because that is the only time I hear good things like this from our Government. But sorry to say this approach is not the answere, it takes a lot more than that to really and honestly solve our problem.
