Bermuda Dialect College Workshop

October 23, 2011

bermuda-collegeWhat you sayin’? A Bermudian linguistics student wants to know.

Britanni Fubler, recently graduated from the University of Toronto with her Bachelors in Linguistics and Portuguese, will be holding a seminar on the unique Bermudian dialect at the Bermuda College on November 3 from 6.30-8.30 p.m.

Entitled “How You Hanlin’ Me?”, the interactive North Hall workshop will give Ms Fubler an opportunity to share her research with Bermudians — while also gathering new information and insights from those in attendance.

“I completed two projects in my final year which have proved to be invaluable to both the linguistic community and our community here in Bermuda,” she told Bernews. “I presented this research in June 2011 and had an overwhelmingly positive response.

“This response has lead me to further develop my papers and include some new research. In addition to geography, history, class, and gender, I will also be addressing a common belief amongst Bermudians: Black and White Bermudians do not sound the same. Come along and find out if this is really true! We will also be discussing the changes in our dialect and whether or not it is facing extinction.”

“You do not want to miss out on learning about our dialect and culture and why we should be proud of our heritage. Invite your friends, colleagues, relatives, aceboys and acegirls!”
