Canadian Sailor Arrives Safe & Sound

December 24, 2011

Giving his family something to celebrate this Christmas season, a Canadian sailor who the Coast Guard had been searching for arrived safe and sound in Bermuda at approximately 3pm this afternoon [Dec.24]. His boat is pictured below docked at Ordnance Island in St George’s.

On December 5th, Sergei Morozov set sail from Canada aboard “Hikari,” a Canadian registered, 35-foot sloop sailboat. The journey to Bermuda was set to be the first leg of an around-the-world solo sailing trip.

The boat sustained mild damage, however he had anticipated arriving in Bermuda by Monday, December 19. Once he was overdue, Mr Morozov’s daughter relayed this to the Coast Guard, who launched a HC-130 Hercules airplane from their North Carolina station to search for Mr. Morozov on Tuesday [Dec.20].

However on Thursday [Dec.22] the sailboat was located approximately 150 miles southeast of Bermuda. The crew of a Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier spotted the sailboat after Mr Morozov fired a parachute flare. Mr. Morozov stated he was not in distress, but requested food, water and assistance with the battery aboard his boat.

Mr Morozov’s blog says his itinerary calls for him to pass through the Panama Canal to the Pacific Ocean on his way to French Polynesia, and then on to Darwin, Australia. From there he plans to head to Mauritius, Cape Town in South Africa, Brazil and then Barbados.
