Photos: Boxing Day Harness Pony Racing

December 26, 2011

Scores of Bermudians made their way to Vesey Street in Devonshire this afternoon [Dec.26] to watch the Boxing Day Harness Pony Racing.

After the first set of races were completed, there was a 20 minute intermission to allow the ponies to warm up for the second round of racing. As the drivers took to the track during the intermission, the rain started to fall and within minutes a heavy downpour was covering the track with water.

As the rain continued to fall, spectators fled for cover, while drivers started to make their way off the track. Prior to the rain suspending racing, winners included Jason Lopes & Captain Progress, Cameron Harris & Here Comes Shady, Edward Roque & Casmir Camotion, and Charles Whited & Just Like That. We will update with full results as able.

The sight of this so-called ‘sport’ disgusts me. First the pony’s legs are shackled to make it run in an unnatural gait, then its head is forced back with a short leather strap, then the drivers – so-called ‘sportsmen’ – whip these animals while they sit on their arses and supposedly feel good about themselves. Sickening. Where is the S.P.C.A.?
