Upcoming: Jump Rope Workshops

The Argus Group is sponsoring Bermuda Heart Foundation’s ‘Jump 2b Fit’ programme, which encourages people to get into jumping rope as a means of getting fit and looking after their heart health.

Bermuda Heart Foundation initially chose jump rope as its heart healthy school initiative as it’s cheap, fun and efficient in strengthening heart and lung muscles, as well as developing coordination, balance, flexibility and rhythm.

Jumping rope is one of the oldest known sports dating back to 1600 BC. It can burn up to 1,000 calories per hour and is suitable for a wide variety of age groups as a form of exercise. This is why the programme has grown beyond the schools and branched out into the community.

Now in its third year, the ‘Jump 2b Fit’ programme will be delivered in three workshops, two targeted specifically at over 400 students from a wide selection of schools, and one public event on Saturday, March 3, from 10am until 1pm. Pre-registration is not required for the public event but places are limited to 150 participants. All of the workshops will be held at Bermuda College Gymnasium.

With the support of Argus, the workshops will be delivered by 18 trainers, more than in previous years, to provide greater hands-on instruction and ensure the workshops are as engaging as possible. The Comet Skippers, a non-profit athletic team from Mason, Ohio, U.S.A., famed for their inspiring and award-winning jump rope displays, are being flown in to facilitate the sessions.

Heart disease is one of Bermuda’s biggest killers; responsible for one in every three fatalities, and clearly education on preventative care is a key part of turning this shocking statistic around.”

Sionna Barton, Marketing & Development Manager, Bermuda Heart Foundation, says: “Your heart is a muscle and, like any other, it needs to be exercised to work efficiently, and jumping rope is a perfect way to do it. A jump rope is a remarkable piece of exercise equipment.

“Not only is it inexpensive and easy to store, but it can be used to improve cardiovascular fitness, increase agility and tone the body’s muscles at the same time. We are grateful to the support of Argus for helping us to make ‘Jump 2b Fit’ bigger than ever before and hopefully getting more and more people into looking after their hearts by jumping rope.”

During the workshops, one jump rope trainer will be focused on training local physical education teachers and sports coaches, in order to aid the continuation of jump rope promotion and instruction throughout the school year.

    Skipping burns 1000 calories an hour!! Who knew? No wonder I stayed slim as a child. Time to pick up the clothes line again, that’s better than jogging, and I don’t even have to leave home!
