St Baldrick’s Charity Head Shaving Underway

March 16, 2012

Razors are buzzing as hair is falling at the BAA Gym this afternoon [Mar.16], as scores of locals turned out for the St Baldrick’s Charity Head Shaving event. There is a bar set up, face painting and a kids corner available, as well as items on sale such as green pom poms, t-shirts, badges, bracelets, hair extensions and more.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a charity funding research to help find cures for kids with cancer. The Foundation raises money for childhood cancer research primarily through international head-shaving events.

Volunteers, sponsored by family, friends and employers, shave their heads in solidarity with children who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment.

Last year the Bermuda event raised over $400,000, and this year the Bermuda St.Baldrick’s effort hopes to raise $600,000. The website shows that $187,339 has been pledged thus far for the BAA event, with shavee Dan Sullivan the top fundraiser with $29,747.

In addition, another event scheduled to take place on Monday, March 19th at Saltus, has gained $75,609 in pledges so far. The event will see 33 Saltus students and staff have their heads shaved at a school assembly to raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and PALS.

The two ladies above — Wanda Trott and Karolyn Darrell-Burgess — are part the Young & The Hairless Team, which also includes former Miss Bermuda Joanne Darrell Herbert, who now resides in Canada and shaved her head earlier this week as a member of the international team participating in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraising effort.
