John Lennon Sculpture To Be Unveiled This Month
This summer, Bermuda will pay tribute to John Lennon’s creative genius during the first-ever John Lennon Double Fantasy Bermuda Tribute with two great events being touted as the Summer of Love by organizer Tony Brannon.
Masterworks Museum will play host to the first of these events on Thursday, June 21, 2012 with the public unveiling of the Graham Foster tribute sculpture, and the opening of the “Imagine the Art of John Lennon” art exhibit. Events start at 5:30pm.
In June 1980, John Lennon sailed to Bermuda on a yacht for an extended vacation, and the resulting comeback album was entitled Double Fantasy, named for a flower he had seen in the Bermuda Botanical Gardens.
“The Imagine the Art of John Lennon” exhibit will include a selection of lithographs from Lennon’s “Bag One Portfolio” – a suite of prints published and hand-signed by John Lennon in 1970, centered around his wedding in Gibraltar to Yoko Ono and posthumous limited edition prints signed by Yoko Ono.
The images are a cross section of “peace” themed drawings, the “Real Love” drawings he created for his son, Sean, and serigraphs created from John Lennon’s hand-written lyrics from the “Double Fantasy” album.
This exhibit will be on display in the Rick Faries Gallery from June 21st – July 4th. The unveiling of the sculpture will take place in the courtyard in front of Masterworks Museum.
Local sculptor Graham Foster has been commissioned to create the piece and he says, “I wanted identifiable imagery, but wanted to steer clear of the “typical” things associated with John Lennon; peace signs, doves etc. I decided to approach the sculpture in an expressionistic way.
“For the design I started sketching and ended up with around one hundred ideas which I then narrowed down to about twenty. These were sent to Yoko Ono, and she agreed with the concepts. I then began working towards a final version.
“The main iconic Lennon imagery I decided to work with were his stylized profile with glasses, the Rickenbacker guitar, doves and freesias (to highlight the Bermuda connection).”
The sculpture itself will be placed in a raised flowerbed planted with Double Fantasy freesias in the courtyard in front of the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. It will be around nine feet high and weigh approximately 4,000lbs. It is being constructed out of a steel material called Core-ten which is a type of weathering steel well suited to Bermuda’s climate.
These events precede a tribute concert which will be held on September 21st, the International Day of Peace. Local artists will join international reggae singer Maxi Priest for an evening of music to celebrate the life of John Lennon.
