Lindo’s Donates $500,000 To KEMH Project

July 5, 2012

The Lindo’s Group of Companies has made a donation of $500,000 in support of the King Edward VII Memorial [KEMH] Redevelopment Project.

BHCT is an independent non-profit organisation that leads fundraising and charitable giving for the Bermuda Hospitals Board [BHB]. It launched the Why It Matters capital campaign in April 2011 and to date the campaign has already raised over half of its Spring 2014 target as a result of generous pledges made by the local and international business community.

L-R: Marilyn Zanol, Giorgio Zanol, William Moniz, Cassie Moniz, James Smith, Sharon Smith, Wendy Augustus:

Giorgio Zanol, President of the Lindo’s Group of Companies, says: “Over six years ago when it became apparent that Bermuda needed a new hospital, we decided that it was necessary for Lindo’s to contribute to such a project, which is so vital to our whole community.

“As a family business we can see the importance of a new hospital for Bermuda’s families and their future grandchildren, the next generation. We opened a special family savings account and have pledged money each year for this purpose. We are blessed to be working together and to enjoy good health so this is our way of showing our appreciation.

“So here we are today, the hospital project is well underway and it’s very exciting to see the walls going up. We ask for God’s protection of all the construction workers involved and thank the management team for all of their hard work to ensure that Bermuda has a first class hospital.

“We make this donation in honour of Harry and Marion Lindo, the founders of Lindo’s Group of Companies, and we thank our staff and customers, for without them we would not be here today. They have all played an integral part in enabling our contribution. Lindo’s is very happy to serve its community in this way.”

Wendy Augustus, Executive Director of BHCT, says: “We are delighted that the Lindo’s family had the foresight to start saving many years ago in order to make such a significant donation to the Why it Matters KEMH redevelopment capital campaign, particularly in this challenging economy.

“As Lindo’s has identified, this project is one that will benefit each and every member of our island community so there really is no better way for companies and individuals to give back to Bermuda. The plans and design for the new hospital have been aligned to address Bermuda’s specific health issues, so patients will be provided with a more bespoke kind of health care.”

The ultimate goal of the KEMH Redevelopment Project is to improve the quality of hospital care for all residents. The plans incorporate 90 single-patient rooms, a new emergency department, diagnostic imaging, ambulatory care services, same-day surgery and dialysis.

  1. In Mark's Opinion says:

Thank You to Lindo’s , my favorite supermarket.

  2. Truth is killin' me... says:

And in other news a petition has been filed to wind up White’s Supermarket. How ironic!

  3. Realist says:

Thank you lindos. Will be shopping there from now on.

  4. mixitup says:

Lindo’s is a GREAT Corporate Citizen! They have done Bermuda Proud! Thank you Lindo’s.

  5. Concerned says:

White’s is going down and Lindo’s is continuing it’s Community Outreach, which perhaps White’s should have done – reach out, touch, embrace and you receive back two-fold.

  6. Kathy says:

All of the Bermudian people are greatful and will benefit from the generous donation. It makes me very proud to see companies giving back to Bermuda where it is greatly needed and where it benefits everyone!

  7. TheFuture says:

This seems like a good gesture but….the price of food just went up by….half a million.

Further, has anyone else noticed how inefficient people are when they spend other people’s money? While the donation may be kind, it inadvertently stimulates more waste.

As if govt. waste wasn’t enough. I

say lower bills for quality food, say half a million dollars lower, is money better spent than on the facility that will “trea”t people who are sick in part because they eat the cheapest of all food sold at supermarkets and elsewhere: junk (and that includes almost everything that is not fresh).

    • Family Man says:

Somebody’s been peeing on your brownies dude. Don’t eat any more.

  8. BDAGIRL says:

Mr and Mrs Lindo would be so proud of what the family has done. Great family. Wish you continued success. It is a great day when you see a contribution like this. Well done.

  9. wondering says:

Lindo’s Social Capital has increased 1000% judging by the previous comments. This is a company who is investing in its country and not just its business.

  10. Tyrone says:

That’s great, but no wonder a box of cereal is $7…

  11. Ryan says:

I doubt we will be seeing a matching donation from White’s.

  12. mac and cheese says:

Whilst all donations are appreciated by the recipients and recognised by the public , yes , myself too in this instance , I wouldn’t get too wound up over it.
Lindo’s is a business and businesses are there to provide a service and make a profit. Lindo’s can run themselves as they best wish , but a the end of the day , this is a mere drop in the bucket compared to the bonuses the family give themselves at the end of every year.

Not being cynical , just pointing it out . Nuttin more , nuttin less.

    • Family Man says:

Well, if you want to get into the grocery store business in order to pay yourself those same bonuses I know of a couple of locations that are coming onto the market.

You might have to work those 10 – 12 hour days into your 70′s like some successful owners do. On the other hand you could work half days, put your feet up and just bitch about poor business. See how that works out for you. Your choice dude.

  13. Paradise Reclaimed says:

Georgio Zanol should be Bermuda’s first living hero honoured. Think about it. He’s built up nice, clean grocery stores, and he works hard, well into his 70′s.

They’re not stuffing their pockets with every penny of profit, or rolling their profits into other ventures, like MarketPlace with Sears. They’re putting their profits back into Bermuda. Seen the parking structure at the Devonshire store? Quite an investment for the future. Always updating, always clean. Always supporting Bermuda.

Gripe all you want about grocery prices, I always find satisfaction at Lindo’s. And, it’s nice to do business with a family that works so hard and gives back!

  14. Justin T says:

I packed groceries at Lindos and made enough money to buy my bike when i went 16 then worked on the floor at various departments for 5 years, I’ve moved on now in my employment but I continue to shop there, Lindos continually reinvests in itself every 4 or 5 years they upgrade all their freezers and shelves and now have made the second story parking in Devonshire, this is something which I don’t see any other supermarket doing apart from Miles Market. Thank You Lindos Family.

  15. BE REAL says:

FOR THE IGNORANT LINDOS DOES NOT SET THE MARGIN ITS ADJUSTED IN COMPARISON WITH THE AMERICAN DISTRIBUTORS.WHITES IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS FOR ALL NEWCOMERS.

  16. wat am i hearing says:

It’s good to see Lindos is giving back to the community again. They have sponsored the Lindos To Lindos, ISL just to name a few. Lindos have no problem when it comes money not like Whites. As u c they r building another parking lot, put solar panels on the roof to cut down their electricity bill which is all good and gave $500.000 to KEMH. But yet Giorgio can’t pay his staff a decent wage SMH. Stop paying your staff pennies!! U can afford to because u can GIVE KEMH $500.000 and give your staff pennies. JUST KEEPING IT REAL!!!!!!
