Additional Staff Redundancies At HWP

September 17, 2012

The HWP Group confirmed this morning [Sept 17] that they have made some staff redundancies at the car dealership, which they said was due to a downturn in sales due to the current economic situation.

Jonathan Brewin, President & CEO, HWP Group stated, “We deeply regret to announce that HWP are forced to make redundancies at this time. The automotive industry has seen a downturn in sales of over 60% in past years due to the current economic situation. Continued right sizing of the company to meet the challenges of reduced revenues is therefore necessary.

“We have been forced to streamline the business further. This has not been an easy decision and we would like to sincerely thank all our staff for their hard work and dedication through these difficult times. We will be working with all the members of staff effected by the redundancies to help them secure new positions,” concluded Mr Brewin.

While the number of staff affected was not officially released, unofficial reports indicate about 6 or 7 people may have been made redundant. HWP previously laid off 21 staff members last year after the massive fire at their St John’s Road location.

  1. When will it end says:

Yet another stark reminder of the economic condition Bermuda finds itself in. Those MPs in the House need to shape up. While we are down here suffering they are up there bickering and getting nowhere fast

    • Swing Voter says:

wait wait wait….I got it now…..fewer guest workers means lower car sales and no maintenance required….just goes to show that Burch’s idiotic scheme (approved by cabinet) continues to hurt us. Put your country first and vote OBA.

  2. Sorrry says:

Thats Bermys story, “Goin nowere Fast!”

  3. Bermudian Worker says:

Maybe lowering the duty on private automobiles would stimulate sales.

  4. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

A vote for PLP (Poorly Lead Party) is a vote into financial slavery.

  5. More bad news . says:

And the trickle down continues with no end in sight . I hate to say what should be obvious to all by now , but we’re nowhere even near the end yet. Still a long way to go.

All service providers , retailers and landlords should be preparing themselves to compete for business like they never have before.
The slight (and that’s all it has been compared to what it’s going to become) decline we’ve seen in some select segments of the property rental market is barely a hint at what’s yet to come .
Service providers … get ready to engage in some serious negotiating or risk loosing out on the dearth of work.

  6. Joonya says:

More layoffs usually means the economic recovery has started….. right Coxy?

  7. Zombie Apolcalypse says:

This can’t possibly be happening. Paula Cox only just told us the economy is rebounding. She wouldn’t lie to us, would she?

    • Chart says:

Paula’s economy is rebounding. Her full pension just kicked in at her Premier’s pay level.
The rest of you can just eat cake, no?

      • Swing Voter says:

some ppl are so blind to the fact that our current politicians are covered and can pack up tonight to comfortably resettle anywhere in the world. The socio-economic engineering over the last 8 years are killing the middle class. At least OBA seem more capable of attracting much needed foreign investment to get us going again. Vote OBA

  8. Triangle Drifter says:

Ahhhh, yes….another PLP ‘Accomplishment’ to check off the list. Traffic problem solved. Chase the expats out, way to go Burchie, flood the market with cheap used vehicles sending others to the dump, nobody needs or can afford a new car unless, of course, it will have a GP tag on it.

    Paulanomics at its best.

    • Sandgrownan says:

Paulanomics! That’s weapons grade awesome right there!

  9. vex says:

    Blame the PLP DUN!

    • No, Dun says:

sory Dun, but you can’t make such a bold proclamation without explaining why. Why should we blame the PLP, Dun? Is it because they’re to blame or is it because they’re not to blame?

you can’t possibly explain the complexity of this situation without consulying the book of Keyseian economics. I rest my case on a crate of beans.

  10. Honestly says:

Maybe the prices of cars should be made attractive! I need a new car, but I will do anything to make my Betsy work and run from point A to point B. Not to mention HWP may not be my supplier of choice. I’ve had lemon for years and no compensation from HWP. Brand new car had electrical problems n needed wiring rebuilt. Still wanted me to pay. LOL they could’ve kept car until someone with sense came along and understood my plight.

  11. Xeno Kills says:

Paula just had a shopping excursion in New York. She take care of us.

  12. M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

HWP ..Now smaller than the smallest business it gobbled up a decade ago .

  13. tidbit says:

The fact of the matter is “we are going to economic hell in a hand basket”. And the only excuse they and their die hard supporters can say is “they did it, so we can do it”. Yes they did do it, which was to attract many new investments and attract over seas companies to set up shop here and provide Bermuda a viable economic society. So why dont the PLP start doing the same and stop running all the business off our Island home. I have said previously I once was a PLP voter, but that is no longer the case. Yes I am also black.
Lets look at HWP for a minute, down sizing again and not to far away from them is a Cabinet Minister who drives around profiling and reading speeches someone else wrote. It is a blatant joke. Bermudian voters put an end to this LIP SERVICE we are getting, vote in a new era and help turn our Island home around. We all have that responsibility. And if the new group comes in and dont make a change, vote them out as well. I am an independent thinker and dont subscribe to any political ideology. This is what is destroying the fabric of our community. We need more independent thinkers. Knoweledge is powerful, start reading and make decisions for yourselves. Why pay these individuals hundreds of thousand of dollars to think for you. They dont have your interest at heart.

  14. Wait & See says:

While I feel sorry for the employees who have lost jobs, I have no sympathy for HWP. They have been entrenched in greed for years and their customer service used to stink in my opinion. They were the monopoly for the longest while so they felt they could do what they wanted.

Six years ago I went to one of their showrooms and saw a car I liked, but they only had a few and weren’t sure when the next shipment would be arriving (or so they said). I plunked down $1,000 as a deposit and went and got a bank loan for the entire cost of the vehicle, figuring they’d give me back the $1,000 that was my money that they were using to hold onto it. This was money I needed for other things, but had to use it if I wanted them to hold the car for me. I figured I’d get the deposit back once I paid for the vehicle.

Lo and behold, even though the bank gave them the full cost they said they couldn’t give me back the $1,000 but that I’d have to use it as a credit. I said in that case I’d go back to the bank and have them take $1,000 off my loan. They said they couldn’t guarantee that they’d be able to hold the car-this despite the fact that they still had the $1,000 deposit…they were just being spiteful, in my opinion. I even went as far as to go to the general manager but was told ‘nope’-we can’t give you back the $1,000 even though the bank was paying the full cost of the vehicle. I caved and ended up using the credit at Home Zone but it irritated me to no end.

MEANWHILE, a friend of mine had the exact same situation at Bermuda Motors. When B.M. received the full payment from the bank, they gave my friend her $1,000 deposit back-NO PROBLEM!!!

I’ve made up my mind never to do business with HWP again due to my experience with their greed and blackmail. They very easily could have given me back the $1,000 but NO, they wanted to keep that on top of being paid by the bank. If I had known they’d do that, I either wouldn’t have made the deposit and just waited for the next shipment or automatically had $1,000 taken off my loan. HWP made an extra $1,000 off me because of this. I’m sure I’m not the only person they’ve done this to so it’s a win-win situationf for them. Their business going up in flames and their current problems is all bad karma biting them in the azz as far as I’m concerned.

My next vehicle will be coming from Bermuda Motors where they have integrity and their customer service is 100% better as well!!!
