Football: Bermuda Defeat St Martin 8-0

[Updated: The Bermuda National Football Team met up with St Martin this evening in Haiti, and walked away with a 8-0 victory. Tyrell Burgess the lead goal scorer for Bermuda with four, while Antwan Russell, Taurean Manders, Lejuan Simmons and Ian Coke all added a goal each. Bermuda will not however advance to the next round in the Digicel Caribbean Cup Qualifying Tournament.]

The Bermuda National Football Team is competing the first round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup Group 1 Qualifying Tournament being held in Haiti.

They are matching up against St. Martin this evening [Sept 11] after losing 2-1 to Puerto Rico in their first match on Sept. 7, and losing 3-1 to Haiti on Sept 9.

Starting lineup: Tahj Bell, Tyrell Burgess, Darius Cox, Khano Smith, Damon Ming, Taurean Manders, Antwan Russell, Domico Coddington, Shakir Smith, Drewonde Bascome and John Nusum. Bermuda sees two changes to the starting lineup with Toronto Pros Reggie Lambe and Freddy Hall departing early.

Head Coach Andrew Bascome has been asked for autographs, and the crowd calls the players by name during warmup. The Haitian squad consists of 12 European based players, and the Haitian coach commended Bermuda on their discipline and composure. Bermuda is playing in their red, St. Marteens in white and blue

Update #1: Bermuda starts their third game going from right to left

Update #2: Bermuda has won a corner in the first minute. The cross floats thru the area

Update #3: Bermuda is enjoying several passing lanes and the majority of the possession. A Burgess strike from 28 goes high

Update #4: In the 4th lazy defending sees St. Martin [SM] get two opportunities on Bell’s goal

Update #6: Bascome has come deep to try and find the ball.

Update #7: A Burgess handball sees SM crack a high shot which Bell handles well

Update #8: In the 8th minutea long ball from the SM left finds the winner who fires left of Bell

Update #9: In the 12th minute Shakir Smith exploits a slower right back to cross through the area with no Bermuda player able to cash in

Update #10: In the 14th minute Coddington and Ming get involved to win a corner

Update #11: From a Coddington corner at the back post Burgess rises high and heads Bermuda in front in the 18th minute. Score Bermuda 1, SM 0

Update #12: A very good long run from SM sees Bell pick another shot out of the air.

Update #13:A move started by Russell and Coddington sees Burgess found on the left who sublimely lobs the keeper for Bermuda’s second. Score now 2 – 0.

Update #14: In the 34th minute Russell doesn’t bother the keeper from a 19 yard free kick

Update #15: In the 36th minute Burgess works the left to see Russell go high

Update #16: In the 38th minute a Ming cross is nodded down to Russell who weakly shoots from 3 yards

Update #17: Bermuda is dominating the possession

Update #18: SM force their second corner.

Update #19: In the 43rd minute Bascome and Manders see their good work called offside.

Update #20: Manders drives hard forcing full length save by SM in the 45th minute

Update #21: The game goes into half-time with Bermuda leading 2 – 0.

Update #22: Crowd is increasing, with the host Haiti to take on Puerto Rico after this match. Estimated 9,000 in attendance.

Update #23: Second half now underway. Manders dictating the pace forces a corner which is wasted with a poor first touch

Update #24: In the 48th minute Burgess claims his hat trick after Coddington lays it on a plate for the midfielder. [The officials gave the first goal to Burgess]

Update #25: Manders is elevating and creating more and more. In the 51st Antwan is released to claim his first of the game.

Update #26: Bascome has dropped to hold in front of the back and is finding more touches.

Update #27: Bell watches a hopeful effort drift wide to his left in the 58th minute

Update #28: In the 60th Burgess and Russell combine. Russell crosses to Manders who makes it 5. Score is now Bermuda 5, St Martin 0

Update #29: Bermuda is set to intro Coke and Simmons into the fray, Cox and Manders make way

Update #30: Russell latches onto a Bascome thru ball but races the shot wide

Update #31: Bascome and Rusell outpace SM. Russsell races down the right cuts back for Simmons. Keeper saves.

Update #32: Burgess shows off some football clear a yard for himself and takes his 4th to the keeper’s right. Score now Bermuda 6, SM 0. Burgess is now removed for Clay Darrell

Update #33: Bell takes care of a close effort by SM

Update #34: Nusum springs the pacey Coke is one on one with the keeper. Calmly makes it 7. Score now 7-0

Update #35: In the 84th minute Bell maintains his clean sheet from a low hard drive

Update #36: In the 88th Russell plays provider and bloods Simmons with his first senior team goal Score now 8-0 to Bermuda.

Update #37: in the 90th Bell defends 25 yards out. Game over, Bermuda finishes the tournament with a 8-0 victory

    Thought I’d get in here first….

    So with only two weeks preparation (which dimisses this summer’s Bermuda Hogges games entirely) AND having some of our best players unavailable, we were a silly, invidivual, defensive mistake from being in a position to move on to the next round.

    What does the peanut gallery say – without referring to 1967?

  3. Bermuda played pretty well on that match that’s why St. Martin didn’t find any chance to defense back. I really like the way Bermuda played. :)
