Masterworks Artist in Residence: Melissa Wishart

September 12, 2012

Melissa Wishart is the Masterworks Museum Artist in Residence from July – September 2012, and will be opening her exhibit to the public on Friday, September 14th, 2012.

The opening reception starts at 5:30pm, where she will be showcasing her oil paintings of Bermuda. The exhibit will highlight scenery, landscapes and people in landscapes across the island. She has been painting scenes from Reid Street, to John Smiths Bay, and sunsets in St. Georges.

Ms Wishart was born in Bermuda in 1964, but she left when she was seven years old and has now returned for the first time in eighteen years. She is absolutely thrilled to be back as the Masterworks Artist in Residence, and has been busy painting in her artist in residency studio and said that she has been working on ten different pieces at a time.

She laughed as she recalled trying to get the “right sea” when she was painting a particular ocean scene. Ms Wishart  has around twenty-four different scenes that she has been working on in such a short period of time. While exploring the island and establishing a connection with each piece that she works on, she has been quite busy.

Ms Wishart said that each piece requires a different amount of time to be invested in it, and she enjoys continuously working on them until she is satisfied with the result. She finds that working from life is the most rewarding and is happy to be back home for this experience.

On Friday, September 21st, Ms Wishart will be holding an oil painting workshop at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, and on Tuesday, September 25th she will be holding another workshop at Buckingham in St. Georges. She will discuss her inspiration, process and technique when oil painting. Please call Masterworks at 299-4000 to book a spot for the workshops in advance.

Wonderful paintings! I particularly like that first one of the street scene – sometimes too much beach when that’s not all to life.
I wonder what about Bermuda specifically kept Ms Wishart coming back to it for inspiration – I mean, of course Bermuda’s beautiful, but she left so long ago and, I assume, has been to and seen many other places in the meantime, so what drew her back to paint these great pieces?
