PLP, OBA, UBP Congratulate President Obama

November 7, 2012

[Updated] The PLP, OBA and UBP have congratulated President Barack Obama on his victory at the polls last night.

A statement issued by the PLP said: “In the United States, you saw an incumbent President win re-election because he stood strong for Americans.

“Instead of engaging in deep and radical austerity cuts, President Barack Obama invested in the American people and created opportunities. He expanded the social safety net with a landmark healthcare reform law that ensures that all Americans have access to quality care.

“Does this sound familiar? Here in Bermuda, we have one party that is standing strong for Bermudians by investing in our people and rejecting deep and radical austerity cuts. We have one party that dramatically expanded the social safety net by introducing the landmark FutureCare and DayCare programmes.

“We are encouraged by President Obama’s resounding re-election and we look forward to offering a similar choice to the Bermudian people. Our Congratulations to the President. We look forward to continuing to work with him and his Administration,” the PLP concluded.

Early this morning, Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier released a statement that said: “On behalf of the One Bermuda Alliance, I would like to congratulate President Barack Obama on his election victory.

“We understand the importance of the longstanding, productive relationship Bermuda has historically enjoyed with the United States, our closest neighbour and trading partner, and we look forward to continuing our steadfast friendship under President Obama’s leadership.

“It is no secret that many Bermudians hold President Obama in high regard and are delighted with his reelection. The One Bermuda Alliance applauds his efforts over the past four years to stabilize the United States economy by carefully balancing plans for debt reduction with the need for a jobs stimulus, to provide universal healthcare, to expand human rights and to stand strong for women’s rights.

“The One Bermuda Alliance looks forward to working with the Obama Administration to maintain and enhance the mutually beneficial relationship between Bermuda and the United States.”

Update 4.28pm: UBP MP Kim Swan said: “Mr. Charlie Swan and I offer heartfelt congratulations to President Obama and his team for an outstanding victory in the United States Presidential election. We were impressed with the way that President Obama was able to win the tough battleground States.

“Notwithstanding, the economic challenges still facing the United States, the people have spoken and have placed their faith in President Obama with another term of office. Our (Bermuda) diplomatic and economic relationship with the United States is a special one – enjoyed for centuries – we wish President Obama and his administration well and pray that they will be successful.”

  1. Um Um Like says:

I’m sure the PLP would still be delighted if Romney had won.

    • frank says:

hell no romney is not about the people all he cares about is money and the american people saw him for what he realy was.a devil

      • Um Um Like says:

He’s a devil and all he cares about is money? Sounds like he’d fit right in with all the other pLoP gangstas.

    • Spot says:

Oh my oh my, The PLP, are trying to pretend they are just like Obama. What a bunch of idiots. They are’t worth the air 19 feet behind Obama. How dare they insult the President, by pretending they stand just like Obama. ________

  2. Dante's Inferno says:

I guess 2 states legalizing marijuana just isn’t news worth reporting.

Trust me Cali and Colorado will be having alot of traffic in the upcoming weeks and months…

  3. Future says:

    What an obamanation.

A very exact description of the way you think .

    • Highly Concerned2 says:

@Future did you just learn that word… SMH!

  4. congrats! says:

Congrats Mr. President! With regards to local impact, watch how fast our election will be called now!

    …watch this space…

  5. Chart says:

I congratulate him as well. And that’s equally irrelevant as the PLP and OBA’s congratulations.

  6. What? says:

I’m surprised no one has highlighted the “deep and radical austere cuts” implemented by the PLP since 2010. The cuts which have seen the Mirrors budget, Sunshine League, Salvation Army all significantly slashed. The same “deep and radical austere cuts” which saw the modification of the daycare allowance increasing the threshold for eligibility and the same ” deep and radical austere cuts” which ended the free BDA college tuition. But there was enough money to buy a W&E truck with rims, tinted windows and leather seats.

    Some just shouldn’t point fingers.

  7. Truth (Original) says:

I am so disgusted with the way the PLP are trying to align themselves with President Obama.

    Pathetic.

    • Chart says:

      It’s wishful thinking.
While Obama is good for the US, he’s actually led policies that are very hostile to Bermuda.

    • Mind boggling stupidity... says:

The PLP must up in the Colorado mountain smoking the newly legalized marijuana if they even think that their failed policies are in alignment with President Obama’s…nuts

      • What? says:

I ws wondering If weed is still illegal at a federal level, how can it be legal on a state level? Can the Feds still lock you up for possession?

        • Come Correct says:

Feds aren’t likely to go after the small fish, they’ll probably keep attacking the dispenceries though. If you watch the documentary ‘how weed won the west’ a dispencery in California was busted, their dog shot, shop destroyed, and all marijuana siezed but no criminal charges ever arose from it. If they legalized it on a federal level I think that would make it legal in all states and there are still a lot of state heads that oppose it. I don’t know its all stupid if you ask me, its a damn plant, just let it go, William Randolf Hurst is dead. Salvia, a hallucinagenic plant still remains legal, go figure.

        • Bazinga! says:

@What?…While Cannabis still remains a Schedule 1 drug as defined in the US Government, there are still questions regarding what are State rights and what right the Federal Government has to supercede those laws.

It’s suspected that Washington and Colorado will pave the way for this rescheduling of Cannabis to happen. Considering the Federal government relies on State law enforcement to ‘dole out’ if you will the penalities/illegality put towards Cannabis use, these two states have now decided by the will of the majority of the people within those states to no longer have Cannabis being a legally punishable crime within it’s borders.

This means it will be difficult for the Federal government to change this except by trying to stifle through pulled grants, threats of prosecution, etc. It will be quite interesting to see how this plays out with the Obama Administration.

          • timeshavechanged! says:

            Its an OBAMAnation!

            • MAKE MY DAY says:

              ***BINGO***!!!!

Unfortunately, you can now “BUY” your votes in the States with welfare cheques, food stamps and promises of “Amnesty” to millions of illegal law-breakers, who have intentionally invaded the country, because he will NOT secure the countries borders – that is how Odummer won re-election!!

But, The country is now very POLARIZED!!! We cannot continue down this road much longer – as something has to give!! Don’t forget that there are over 200 million “armed” Americans – many who are very patriotic and will NEVER allow their country to become a “socialist state”!!!

    • frank says:

you sound like a stupid oba fan

      • Bullseye says:

Ok. So is Obama up for grabs? Can a store on front street say that Michelle Obama wears dresses and we sell dresses? So come shop with us!!!! ???
That is basically what the PLP is saying. They have first labelled the opposition without facts, then aligned themselves with Obama without reason.
Last time I checked Obama didnt have a surplus to work with, nor record income, and still manage to create record debt.
I also don’t think that Obama is pointing his finger alot further back than 4 years to blame for his decisions or predicament.
So the Obama similarity is where?

  8. Obama Aid in all flavors says:

Wait until Obama introduces martial law. Then we will see who will be praising him. The smooth talker has done it again….WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

BHO is not that stupid as he knows there are over 200 million “armed” Americans – many who are very patriotic and will NEVER allow their country to become a “socialist state”!!!

  9. Jim Bean says:

Again I ask the question!! WHO HAS LINKS WITH ROMNEY – YES THE PLP!!

To the paid bloggers out there its time for the Bermudian people to ask why the current Government spent $800,000 of their money to hire Mitt Romney’s National Finance Co-Chair (Eric Tanenblatt)and key strategic advisor in relation to the City Hall debacle – the same City Hall now charging you for a Christams parade. Out of the tens of thousands of qualified international law and government relations attorneys in Washington DC and New York, why would Paula pay nearly a million Bermudian dollars to a team based in the deep red southern state of Georgia? Instead of a team led by an established and qualified Democratic legal consultant would they funnel Bermudian taxpayer monies to a team led by a well-known Republican political operative to do away with the corporation of hamilton? A top fundraiser for George W. Bush, a fundraiser and advisor for Romney in 2008 and a key strategic advisor and National Finance Co-Chair for Romney’s 2012 campaign? To learn more following the links below, because the more you learn about this, the more you wonder.

    WELL SAID MATE

    LET DE TRUTH BE TOLD

  11. Ringmaster says:

Seems pretty clear the PLP have been patronising fundraisers for Mitt Romney’s campaign. Supporting the Republican multi millionaires. So much for their crocodile cheers for President Obama. I would agree there are some similarities between the PLP and the Democrats. Both have managed to vastly increase debt while increasing unemployment and failing to put in place policies to creat jobs.

    • D Jones says:

I find this governments attempt to compare itself to Obama extremely insulting to Obama. They are opposites of this man. He has honesty, integrity, and the sense to make race a non-issue. There is no one in the PLP qualified to bring this man coffee. (Cept maybe Wayne).

  13. MAKE MY DAY says:

Very unfortunately… Another 4 years of “Hell” coming-up for the USA!!

This guy did NOTHING for the country during his previous 4 years – unemployment still at 8% (23 million people out-of-work) – 47 million people on “food Stamps” – 1 in 6 Americans live BELOW the poverty line and he INCREASED the national debt by $$6 TRILLION!!!

Add to that the “Fast and Furious” gun debacle and now the Benghazi Consulate “cover-up” and you have a very BIG mess in America!! Also, add to that the fact that we are now rapidly heading towards the “Fiscal Cliff” (National Debt)… a point-of-no-return which puts the Nation in deep “Doo-Doo”!!

We have become a “welfare state” where BHO literally brought-his-votes – by giving so many undeserving people (including Mexican illegal’s) so many undeserved financial “benefits” – in order to stay in office!!

What goes around eventually comes around!! Can we survive? Only time will tell!!

  14. MAKE MY DAY says:

He is an arrogant narcissist – do you really think he cares about BDA???
