April 30, 2013

[Updated with photos] As guests from Africa, the Caribbean, North America and Bermuda waited for the final award of the evening, Kitty Pope and Dr. Babs Onabanjo presented the African Diaspora World Tourism Person of the Year Award on former Premier Dr. Ewart Brown.

“I was totally caught off guard when my name was called,” said Dr. Brown. The former Premier accepted the award “on behalf of the Bermudian people who, despite our small size, were not afraid to lead. We accepted the responsibility of reigniting a flame started by Minister David Allen.”

Maxine Esdaille, Chair for the ADHT Bermuda Foundation said, “The African Diaspora Heritage Trail [ADHT] Bermuda Foundation is pleased and proud to commend Dr. Ewart F. Brown, former chairperson of the ADHT Bermuda Foundation, on his induction into the African Diaspora World Tourism Hall of Fame at the first ever African Diaspora World Tourism Award ceremony.”

Mrs. Florenz Maxwell had earlier accepted an award on behalf of the Bermuda ADHT for the work done to produce Heritage Trails throughout the Diaspora.

The Awards Ceremony was designed to showcase and appreciate the service and dedication of leaders from around the world who have significantly impacted on tourism and inspired the exploration of black culture and heritage sites around the globe.

There were two levels of awards: the “Who’s Who” Awards and “Hall of Fame” in Black Culture and Heritage Tourism. The “Hall of Fame” category is for notables who have made legendary contributions that have significantly impacted black culture and heritage tourism development.
